Here’s how I draw a hard, practical line between AI assistance and decision ownership—and why that line matters more than any tool choice.
I Let AI Expand, Never Commit
AI’s role in my workflow is exploration.
I use it to:
Surface options
Map tradeoffs
Stress-test ideas
Reveal blind spots
What I never let it do is decide.
The moment a choice affects:
Direction
Risk
Reputation
Outcomes
AI stops being the driver.
Assistance expands thinking.
Ownership collapses it.
I Name the Decision Before I Prompt
Before I use AI, I write the decision in plain language:
“We are deciding whether to X or Y.”
“This recommendation will be shared with Z.”
“The downside of being wrong is ___.”
If I can’t name the decision clearly, AI has no business generating around it yet.
This single habit prevents 80% of overreach—because AI is responding to intent, not filling a vacuum.
I Treat AI Output as Input, Not Authority
I never ask:
“What should we do?”
I ask:
“What are the strongest arguments for and against this?”
“What assumption would a skeptic attack first?”
“Where does this break under pressure?”
AI gives me material.
I assign weight.
If something moves forward, it’s because I chose it, not because it appeared convincing on the screen.
I Rewrite Every Conclusion Myself
This rule is non-negotiable.
Even when I agree with the AI, I rewrite:
The recommendation
The framing
The final call
In my own words.
With my priorities.
Owning the implications.
If I can’t rewrite the conclusion cleanly, I’m not ready to own the decision.
This is where accountability gets locked in.
I Make Tradeoffs Explicit
AI loves balance.
Decisions require sacrifice.
So before anything ships, I force myself to name:
What we’re choosing
What we’re giving up
What risk we’re accepting
AI can outline tradeoffs endlessly.
Ownership means selecting one and standing behind it.
If no tradeoff is named, no decision has actually been made.
I Ask Who Pays If This Is Wrong
This question keeps ownership human:
If this decision fails, who absorbs the cost?
If the answer is “me,” I slow down.
If the answer is “the team,” I double-check assumptions.
If the answer is “the company,” AI stays firmly in assistant mode.
AI doesn’t experience consequences.
Decision owners do.
That difference matters.
The Line I Don’t Cross
AI can:
Inform
Challenge
Clarify
Accelerate
It cannot:
Take responsibility
Bear risk
Defend outcomes
Own consequences
When that line stays clear, AI is a multiplier.
When it blurs, credibility erodes—quietly and fast.
The Result
Separating assistance from ownership didn’t make me slower.
It made me decisive.
My work:
Holds up under scrutiny
Requires less back-and-forth
Feels authored again
AI helps me think wider.
I decide narrower—and deliberately.
That’s the balance that scales.
