5 Things I Learned Test-Driving 20 Cars This Year

I test cars for a living. This year alone I have driven over 20 different vehicles, from $22,000 economy sedans to six-figure luxury SUVs. Here is what surprised me.

1. Good seats are rarer than you think

I have sat in cars that cost $65,000 with seats that hurt after 45 minutes. Meanwhile, a $28,000 Honda Civic had some of the best seats I experienced all year. Price does not predict comfort. Try before you buy. Sit in the car for at least 10 minutes. Adjust everything.

2. Touchscreens are getting worse, not better

Climate controls buried three menus deep. Volume sliders that need pixel-perfect precision. Haptic feedback that feels like a wet handshake. The best systems I used this year still had physical knobs for climate and volume. The worst made me want to pull over just to change the fan speed.

3. The horsepower wars are over

Nobody needs 400 horsepower to get groceries. The cars that impressed me most this year were not the fastest. They were the most balanced. A Mazda CX-50 with 187 horsepower felt better to drive than several 300-horsepower crossovers. Tuning matters more than the number.

4. EVs work great if you can charge at home

I spent two weeks with an EV and a public charging routine. It was fine. I spent one week with a home charger. It was life-changing. Waking up to a full tank every morning changes how you think about driving. Public charging still needs work, but home charging is the real EV killer app.

5. The best car is usually the one you can afford without stress

A car payment should not keep you up at night. The most satisfied car owners I know drive paid-off Toyotas and Hondas. They are not thinking about depreciation curves or negative equity. They are driving to work and taking road trips on weekends.
