Contributing to Tech Assessment Knowledge: My Hacktoberfest 2024 Journey

This is a submission for the 2024 Hacktoberfest Writing challenge: Contributor Experience

Contributing to Tech Assessment Knowledge: My Hacktoberfest 2024 Journey

As a technology professional passionate about knowledge sharing, I found the perfect opportunity during Hacktoberfest 2024 to contribute to the linkedin-skill-assessments-quizzes repository. This project aims to help professionals prepare for LinkedIn skill assessments by providing a comprehensive collection of practice questions.

Why I Chose This Project

The repository caught my attention because it addresses a real need in the tech community. LinkedIn skill assessments have become an important way for professionals to validate their expertise, and having access to practice questions can make a significant difference in preparation.

My Contributions

I successfully completed all four pull requests, focusing on adding new questions across different technology domains:

  1. Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

  2. Git Version Control

  3. Cybersecurity

    • Added three new questions (Q173-Q175) to strengthen the security assessment
    • Pull Request #7070
  4. Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Key Learnings

Throughout this Hacktoberfest journey, I gained valuable insights:

  1. Cross-Domain Knowledge: Creating questions across different technologies helped me strengthen my understanding of various tech domains.

  2. Quality Standards: Each contribution needed to meet specific quality guidelines, teaching me the importance of standardization in collaborative projects.

  3. Git Workflow: The process reinforced my git skills, from branch creation to pull request management.

Impact and Value

My contributions added 8 new questions across four crucial technology domains. These additions will help professionals:

  • Prepare better for LinkedIn skill assessments
  • Understand key concepts in cloud computing, security, and version control
  • Test their knowledge before taking official assessments

Final Thoughts

Participating in Hacktoberfest 2024 was more than just completing four pull requests – it was about contributing to a resource that helps technology professionals advance their careers. The experience reinforced the power of open-source collaboration and the impact small contributions can have when multiplied across a community.

I encourage other professionals to find projects that align with their expertise and passion. Whether it's adding documentation, fixing bugs, or contributing content, every contribution matters in the open-source ecosystem.
