Unity Game Development Costs Are Falling: What the Unity CEO Says and Why It Matters

Unity CEO Says Game Development Costs Are Falling

Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg believes the cost of building video games is “coming down markedly,” creating new opportunities for independent developers, startups, and smaller studios. In a recent interview with The Game Business, he expressed strong optimism about the future of the gaming industry despite recent layoffs, studio closures, and market uncertainty.

According to Bromberg, game development once required teams of 100–300 people working for several years. Modern game engines, AI-assisted workflows, reusable assets, automation, and better production tools are now helping smaller teams create high-quality experiences with fewer resources.

However, Bromberg also emphasised that successful games are still extremely difficult to build. AI cannot instantly generate a complete, commercially successful game. Strong creative direction, technical expertise, engaging gameplay, and a deep understanding of players remain essential.

He advised studios to shorten development cycles, connect with players as early as possible, and build games alongside their communities. The traditional approach of developing a game privately for five years and expecting it to become an immediate hit is no longer practical for most studios.

Unity supports this faster, feedback-driven approach through rapid prototyping and cross-platform development for mobile, PC, console, AR, and VR. It enables businesses to test concepts, control costs, and launch games more efficiently.
