Building useful software, sharing the source code, and giving developers the freedom to create.
Hi DEV Community! 👋
Today, I'd like to introduce ConnectApp, an independent open-source initiative focused on building applications that prioritize privacy, transparency, and code reusability.
The idea behind ConnectApp is simple:
What if more applications were designed not only to be used, but also to be understood, modified, and improved by other developers?
That's the philosophy we're building around.
🚀 What is ConnectApp?
ConnectApp is a growing collection of open-source applications released under the Apache License 2.0.
Our goal is to create practical applications that developers can:
- Explore to understand how they work.
- Use as starting points for their own projects.
- Modify and extend to meet different requirements.
- Contribute to through GitHub.
- Reuse in personal or commercial projects, following the license terms.
We want our repositories to be more than downloadable source code. They should become useful learning resources and foundations for new software.
🔐 Privacy should be part of the architecture
Many modern applications depend heavily on cloud infrastructure and external services, even when those dependencies aren't essential.
At ConnectApp, we believe another approach deserves more attention: local-first software.
Whenever practical, we aim to design applications that store and process information directly on the user's device.
This approach can provide several advantages:
- Greater user control over personal information.
- Reduced reliance on external infrastructure.
- Fewer unnecessary data transfers.
- Applications that can offer useful functionality without continuous internet connectivity.
Of course, local storage doesn't automatically guarantee privacy or security. Data protection also depends on implementation details, encryption, access controls, dependencies, and responsible development practices.
Our goal is to make those decisions transparent.
💻 What are we building?
ConnectApp currently focuses on projects such as:
💰 BudgetApp
A budget management application built with Python and PySide6, supporting local SQLite storage and optional remote MySQL connectivity.
It's an example of how desktop application architecture and data management can be explored through reusable source code.
🩺 PhysioApp
A Kotlin Multiplatform project focused on physiotherapy management.
It's an evolving project that explores cross-platform application development and local data management.
💊 MiBotiquinApp
A mobile application concept for managing medication reminders and stock, with a focus on local information management and useful medication-related workflows.
Each project has its own development status, documentation, and technical requirements. They should be evaluated individually rather than assumed to be production-ready.
🧩 More than a collection of repositories
We're also building ConnectApp.es, a bilingual website where developers can discover applications, understand their architecture, read technical articles, and navigate to the relevant GitHub repositories.
The website itself follows a lightweight approach using Astro and statically generated pages.
Our content will cover subjects such as:
- Open-source software development.
- Local-first architecture and data storage.
- Kotlin Multiplatform and Python development.
- Application design and maintainability.
- Privacy-conscious engineering.
- Lessons learned while building real projects.
🤝 Open source should remain accessible
ConnectApp's projects are intended to remain free to access, study, and reuse under their respective licenses.
We believe open-source sustainability should be based on transparent, voluntary support rather than intrusive advertising or unnecessary restrictions.
We also welcome constructive feedback, issue reports, documentation improvements, and code contributions.
🌍 Let's build and learn together
ConnectApp is still growing, and there's plenty to improve, explore, and share.
If you're interested in open-source development, privacy-first applications, software architecture, or learning through real projects, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
What do you value most in an open-source application that you want to use as a foundation for your own project?
Feel free to share your perspective in the comments.
Thanks for reading, and welcome to ConnectApp! 🚀
