An open-source project exploring privacy-conscious patient management, clinical documentation, and cross-platform development.
Hi DEV Community! π
After introducing ConnectApp, our independent open-source initiative, it's time to share one of the projects we're developing: PhysioApp.
PhysioApp is an open-source application designed to explore how physiotherapy professionals and clinics can manage their daily activities through a simple, organized, and privacy-conscious digital experience.
The project is being developed using Kotlin Multiplatform, with a focus on tablet devices, local data management, and reusable software architecture.
Let's take a closer look!
π©Ί What is PhysioApp?
Physiotherapy professionals manage more than appointments and treatments.
Their daily work can involve registering patients, organizing professional information, preparing reports, managing administrative records, and protecting sensitive information.
PhysioApp aims to bring several of these activities together in a single application.
Our main goals are:
- Make everyday administrative tasks easier to manage.
- Provide a clear, tablet-friendly interface.
- Reduce unnecessary dependence on external services.
- Explore privacy-conscious approaches to storing information.
- Share reusable code with the open-source community.
PhysioApp is currently a pre-alpha project, so it is not intended for production use or the processing of real clinical patient data.
π» What can PhysioApp do?
The current development includes interfaces and workflows for several key activities.
1. Patient management
PhysioApp provides screens for registering and searching patient records.
The registration interface includes identification and contact information, optional notes, and a section intended for data-processing information and consent.
Patient records can be searched using different criteria, including identification documents, names, and email addresses.
2. Professional management
The application also includes professional registration and search capabilities.
These screens are designed to organize information such as professional identification, registration details, and contact information.
3. Clinical reports
PhysioApp provides a workflow for creating reports associated with patients and professionals.
The interface includes fields for report details and the patient's condition, helping organize relevant documentation.
Clinical report workflows and their suitability for real healthcare environments still require further validation.
4. Internal payment records
Administrative work is another part of running a physiotherapy practice.
PhysioApp includes a screen for preparing internal payment receipts, with fields for:
- Patient identification.
- Service description.
- Amount.
- Payment status.
- PDF export.
These internal receipts are not substitutes for legally required invoices.
5. Security and backups
The settings section includes options for changing passwords, regenerating recovery codes, and creating or restoring backups.
These features reflect our intention to give users greater control over their information.
However, their security and reliability must be verified before any real-world clinical deployment.
π Why privacy matters
Healthcare-related applications handle particularly sensitive information.
At ConnectApp, we believe privacy should be considered during software design, rather than added as an afterthought.
PhysioApp explores a local-first approach, aiming to reduce unnecessary data transmission and external infrastructure dependencies.
But local storage alone does not guarantee security or regulatory compliance.
Before PhysioApp can be considered suitable for professional clinical use, its security mechanisms, data-protection documentation, consent processes, and functionality must undergo appropriate review and testing.
𧩠Why Kotlin Multiplatform?
One of the technical goals of PhysioApp is to explore how Kotlin Multiplatform can support reusable application logic across platforms.
This approach offers interesting opportunities for developers:
- Sharing appropriate parts of the application logic.
- Organizing code into maintainable components.
- Reducing duplication between supported platforms.
- Building a foundation that can evolve as requirements change.
PhysioApp is part of our broader goal at ConnectApp: developing applications that are useful in their own right while also providing learning opportunities and reusable code for developers.
π An Open Source initiative
PhysioApp belongs to ConnectApp, an independent initiative created and led by Manuel MarΓa Alconchel FernΓ‘ndez.
ConnectApp focuses on building and sharing applications that promote:
π Open-source development.
π Privacy-conscious design.
π» Reusable and maintainable code.
π€ Collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Our projects are intended to be distributed under the Apache License 2.0, allowing developers to study, modify, and reuse the code in accordance with the license terms.
π§ What's next for PhysioApp?
The next steps include further testing, improving workflows, reviewing security-related functionality, and gathering feedback from potential users and developers.
Our goal is to keep improving the project without compromising transparency about its current limitations.
π¬ We'd love your feedback!
If you're interested in Kotlin Multiplatform, healthcare-related software design, local-first applications, or open-source architecture, we'd love to hear from you.
What do you think is the biggest challenge when building privacy-conscious applications for healthcare professionals?
