Upcloud is a cloud hosting provider from Finland that is unmanaged. What is unmanage?, Unmanage is a server/hosting service that must be configured by itself in order to be used to run a website or an application. Upcloud already has 6 datacenters in several countries, namely Finland, United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Singapore. I've been using UpCloud for over two years and so far it's been very satisfying. In this article, we will discuss the flexibility of one of UpCloud's products, namely Block Storage.
UpCloud Simple Pricing
UpCloud is one of the cheapest cloud VPS providers out there, for only $5 you get a Cloud VPS with 1GB RAM, 1 Core CPU and 25 GB Disk. Oh yes, the advantage of Upcloud is that they have MaxIOPS technology for their storage and claim that MaxIOPS is faster than SSD. Here is the price list from UpCloud.
You can try cloud hosting for free for 3 days just by signing up for UpCloud and verifying your credit card, but your credit card will not be charged during the trial, the credit card will be charged if the trial period is up and you make a payment to use next upcloud service. You can also get a $50 credit that can be used for 60 days by using the promo code semigataweb or clicking this link.
What is MaxIOPS Block Storage?
MaxIOPS block storage is a storage service developed by UpCloud for superior performance. In addition, this block storage is very easy to add to a running server very easily, in just seconds without losing our data. However, the additional limit is 2TB for 1 block volume.
Block storage is very easy to move from server A to server B on the condition that the capacity must be the same. For example, we want to move from San Jose to London. After the London cloud server has been deployed, the next step is to replace the newly created block storage with the old block storage so it doesn't take time to download and upload backup files and the London server can immediately run applications from the old server.
The advantage of block storage from UpCloud is that you can add new storage and combine it with old storage if the old storage is still lacking. As for how to combine the two storages by following our guide on how to add and remove storage.
In the example image above you can add new storage that is still empty or add to the existing one.
With MaxIOPS block storage, we can also clone data and the entire system that has been formed so that it is easy and fast in the deployment process. The time used to deploy a cloud server on UpCloud is only about 45 seconds after which the server can be used.
Simple Backup
UpCloud has a backup feature that is simple and fast to take snapshots without disturbing the performance of the server. UpCloud will backup the entire system not just the file system so that one day when there is damage to the running system, all you have to do is restore the backup file according to the desired date without having to reinstall and reconfigure.
UpCloud has 3 backup plans, namely weekly, monthly and yearly. For weekly backups, regular backups will be carried out every day for 7 days. Monthly backups will be performed for 4 weeks plus daily whereas annual backups will be performed every day of the year. Here's an example of the price for each backup plan.
The example above is for a simple plan cloud server for $10.
The plans include the following backups:
- Week plan with 7 daily backups a week, +20% of your cloud server plan price. Additional storage outside the plan $0.05 per GB
- Month plan with 4 weekly backups retained for a month + 7 daily backups, +40% of your monthly plan price Additional storage outside the plan $0.10 per GB
- Year plan with 12 monthly backups for a year + 7 daily and 4 weekly backups, +60% of your monthly plan price Additional storage outside the plan $0.15 per GB
MaxIOPS Block Storage Benchmark Test
We will try to see the performance of block storage offered by UpCloud which has MaxIOPS technology by using a bench mark script. sh. In this experiment we used a cloud server located in Singapore and the following are the results.
Based on the above test, the cloud server uses Intel Xeon Gold 6136 at a speed of 3.00 GHz, while the I/O speed of the storage is on average 420 MB/s, this speed is equal to the average SSD value in general and with a value of this size it is quite good to run a website or application. The download speed for certain nodes has a very fast speed of more than 100MB/s.
If you are interested in trying or want to use a cloud server from UpCloud. You can get a $50 credit that can be used for 60 days by using the promo code semigataweb or clicking this link.
