While you may write REST APIs that only you consume, others may write an API to allow millions of consumers to access it.

Distributed systems exist and drive the most important things we use every day. Sure if you're making a website for a small business or whatever making a distributed system may be over-engineering things but I wouldn't imagine Twitter would work well with an isomorphic TypeScript stack.
