Mastercard launched AP4M on June 10 with 30+ partners including Stripe, Coinbase, and Solana Foundation. OSL Group deployed AgentPay on August 7 with multi-stablecoin routing across x402, AP2, and MPP. Cloudflare shipped Wallets on August 4.
The payment rails are here. The question nobody is asking: what are agents actually buying?

Four of seven layers are built. The top three — discovery, verification, integration — are where the real bottleneck lives.
What Agents Actually Try
Across 12,277 trials from a live marketplace:
- Captcha Solving — 1,202 trials
- Gas Price — 1,182 trials
- Service Discovery — 1,121 trials
- Polymarket Data — 571 trials
- Time/Date — 473 trials
The top 3 capture 29% of volume. 181 endpoints (55%) have fewer than 20 trials. Power-law discovery means agents only try what they already know exists.
The Three Gaps
Discovery is Random. 150K x402 endpoints exist. Agents find them through READMEs or hardcoded URLs. No ranking, no relevance matching.
Verification is Absent. An independent audit found 76% of endpoints unreachable. The ecosystem has $50B in volume but cannot tell you which endpoints work.
Integration is Manual. Every service needs 50+ lines of payment-handling code. REST APIs: one line with an API key. We need SDKs.
The $50B vs. 2.2% Paradox
The $50B is human-initiated (delegation). The 2.2% is agent-initiated (agency). The gap between them is the autonomy frontier — and crossing it requires discovery, verification, and one-line integration.
What Comes Next
The payment rails are commoditizing. In 12 months, processing agent payments will be table stakes. The next differentiation:
- Discovery that ranks by reliability and actual usage
- Continuous verification — probe every endpoint, delist dead ones
- One-line SDKs for every agent framework
- Trial-first as the default discovery mechanism
