Ask what is wrong with a profile photograph and people talk about their expression. Look at the actual failures and most of them are behind the person.
Why the background wins
At full size a dark background behind dark hair looks considered. Scale it down and the head loses its edge entirely — a silhouette with features somewhere inside and no boundary.
Undetectable in the conditions used to choose, total in the conditions where the image is seen. That is why it survives so long unnoticed.
The fix is not white
It is separation from your own hair colour, a different colour for different people. Light hair needs a mid or dark background; dark hair needs a lighter one. Blanket advice fails for about half of people and gives the rest a cut-out, floating look.
Which backgrounds work in this context treats it as a contrast decision rather than a taste one, which is the correct frame.
The second-order variable
Distance. A metre or more between you and the wall throws the background slightly out of focus and removes texture competing with your face. Standing against the wall does the opposite, and is what most people do.

The requirements for a professional network start from the viewing conditions rather than from photographic ideals: one image, seen small, in a list of eleven other faces, with about a second of attention.
Three things survive and none involves a camera: hair-background contrast, a tight crop, frontal light.

One field among several and not the highest-leverage one. Improving the profile with the image as one input treats it in that proportion — the headline text does more work in most searches.
