A new audit by Reese Richardson catalogs 18,943 images used as validation data for 17,495 antibody products across 15 vendors. I went through the findings and checked the sources. The pattern is worse than a few bad photos.
What the images show
- Duplicated bands across different products.
- Backgrounds painted over.
- One "background pattern" reused across thousands of listings.
- Bands moved so they match the expected result.
The same HAS1 blot appears under Thermo, Millipore Sigma, Novus and Boster. Six companies share a single background image.

Thermo Fisher leads the set: 5,580 images covering 4,819 products. Abcam: 185.
The response
Asked about it, Thermo said: "No. The Company fully stands by the data and underlying science." Their product pages now warn that images "may have been edited, optimized or otherwise adjusted." Richardson has yet to find a single image labeled "raw-unedited."
The quotations
Some product pages quote papers as if those papers used the product. Kersten's group was quoted as using a Thermo antibody in a 25-year-old paper. They didn't. It came from Eurogentec. Richardson's words: "The quote is a total fabrication."
Why this matters more than the images
A 0.1 ml vial of antibody runs $400 to $500. YCharOS estimated in 2024 that over half of all antibodies fail. Faked validation data does not prove any specific antibody is bad. It proves the catalog can no longer tell good from bad, and that is exactly what buyers rely on it to do.
Caveats
This is not a complete audit of every vendor or product. Bigger counts do not automatically mean bigger problems, only bigger catalogs. The finding is about a pattern in published validation data, and about what a buyer can actually verify.
