Yes, this is exactly right. We really want something new in this new era of AI, because everything is changing.
So, we need new ways to learn and experiment with open source. Open source isn't just behind closed models anymore; it is neck-and-neck, competing with and even outperforming some frontier proprietary models.
It is really worth learning and experimenting with these tools, and even creating some fully functional agents. With open source, this will be a great year of Hacktoberfest, and I'm fully excited for this.
Love this shift. The four-PRs-for-a-shirt era actually got me into open source years ago. 😅 When a PR can be generated in seconds, the count doesn’t really tell you much anymore.
Moving from “how many did you submit?” to “what did you learn to build?” feels much more meaningful.
I’m coming back to open source from a completely different direction this time — detection. My thing has always been finding what doesn’t belong, first in atmospheric data and now in cybersecurity. 🔎

This is a great direction for Hacktoberfest. Moving from PR counting to meaningful learning and building feels especially important now that AI can generate code so quickly. I’m particularly interested in the focus on open-source skills and agents. Looking forward to seeing what developers build this year!

Pivoting from the 4-PR rule to actually building and fine-tuning open-source AI is exactly the refresh Hacktoberfest needed. I recently wrapped up a project building an automated AI career coach, and the potential for integrating open-weight models into those kinds of workflows is huge. Has anyone else started brainstorming what kind of agents they plan to build this October?
