TIL: How to Record a Response File for GBase Database Silent Installation

Writing a response file manually for GBase Database(GBase 8s) can be error-prone. A misspelled parameter or an unsupported value may cause problems when you automate the installation.

Fortunately, the installer can record your choices during an interactive installation and save them to a response file.

Record Your Installation Choices

Run the following command from the directory containing the installer:

./ids_install -r /opt/bundle.properties
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Follow the interactive installation prompts as usual. The installer records the supported installation settings in /opt/bundle.properties, which you can then review and reuse for silent installation.

Depending on the installer version, the recorded settings may include the installation directory, selected components, and other installation options.

Why Record Instead of Starting from Scratch?

This approach offers three practical benefits.

1. Fewer manual errors

You don't have to guess every parameter name or construct the entire response file from memory.

2. A useful starting point

The response file is generated from an actual installation workflow, giving you a practical configuration to review before automating deployment.

3. Easier customization

After recording the file, you can inspect it and adjust the settings required for your target environment.

One important caveat: a recorded response file is not automatically guaranteed to work on every server. Review the parameters, confirm any required license-acceptance setting, and check for paths or options that differ between environments.

A Practical Workflow for GBase Database

For batch deployment of GBase Database(GBase 8s), use this sequence:

  1. Record a representative interactive installation.
  2. Review the generated response file.
  3. Adjust and validate the required parameters.
  4. Test silent installation on a single target machine.
  5. Reuse the validated configuration for additional servers.

The key idea is simple: record first, review second, automate third.

This workflow reduces unnecessary manual editing and provides a more reliable starting point for repeatable database deployment.

Have you tried recording an installation response file, or do you usually build yours manually?
