Your viewer’s thumb is hovering over the back button. You’ve got about three seconds before they swipe away to another desk setup tour or AI tutorial.
If your retention graph looks like a ski slope, you need to master the Open Loop Hook.
Borrowed from Hollywood screenwriters, an Open Loop is a copywriting framework that opens a psychological "tab" in the viewer’s brain. It introduces a mystery, a high-stakes scenario, or a counter-intuitive claim without giving immediate closure. Because human psychology craves resolution, viewers are forced to stay tuned to close that mental loop.
Most tech creators kill their retention by closing the loop in the first ten seconds:
❌ “Today we’re testing this $600 mini PC to see if it can edit 4K video.” (Boring. Loop closed instantly.)
Instead, tease the outcome and withhold the "how" or "why":
✅ “I replaced my $4,000 workstation with this $600 box for a week. It handled 8K footage easily, but on day four, it did something that almost made me wipe the drive.”
Now the viewer has to know: What happened on day four?
The 3-Step Framework
- The Tease: Lead with an unexpected result, a severe limitation, or an extreme claim.
- The Stagger: Shift into the main narrative, but intentionally delay the answer to your initial tease.
- The Payload: Pay off the hook near the middle or end of the video—never the intro.
Here’s another example for dev and AI creators:
- "I let an autonomous AI agent manage my server for 24 hours, and by 2 PM, it made a security decision I didn’t think was possible."
Stop giving away the punchline upfront. Open the loop, delay the resolution, and watch your average view duration soar.
