TikTok Video Downloader API: Parse Public URLs with Python
A product that accepts public TikTok links often needs the same small set of backend steps: validate the URL, call a parser, return normalized media data, and keep credentials away from the browser. This guide shows a focused Python integration for the Easydown TikTok API.
The example is for public single-post URLs. It is a developer API workflow, separate from the free browser downloader for individual use.
Call the TikTok endpoint
Use the platform-specific endpoint when you want TikTok-aware media and platform fields:
POST https://api.easydown.org/api/v1/platforms/tiktok/parse
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_EASYDOWN_TOKEN
Content-Type: application/json
{
"url": "https://www.tiktok.com/@creator/video/VIDEO_ID"
}
The request body accepts a public media URL. The compatibility field link is also accepted, but new clients can use url consistently across platforms.
The response contains normalized media information and TikTok platform data. See the TikTok API reference for the response schema and authentication details.
Python example
import os
import requests
API_URL = "https://api.easydown.org/api/v1/platforms/tiktok/parse"
TOKEN = os.environ["EASYDOWN_API_TOKEN"]
response = requests.post(
API_URL,
headers={
"Authorization": f"Bearer {TOKEN}",
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
json={"url": "https://www.tiktok.com/@creator/video/VIDEO_ID"},
timeout=30,
)
response.raise_for_status()
media = response.json()
print(media)
Keep the bearer token in a server-side environment variable or secret manager. A browser or mobile client should call your own backend rather than exposing the token.
Credits and retry behavior
A successful TikTok parse costs 1 credit. Authentication, permission, invalid URL, unsupported platform, balance, and temporary service errors are not charged according to the API definition. Handle those classes separately:
- Return a clear validation message for 4xx input or account errors.
- Retry 5xx responses with a bounded exponential backoff.
- Set a timeout and attach your own correlation ID to logs without recording the token.
If your application supports multiple social platforms, the normalized endpoint keeps the request shape consistent:
POST https://api.easydown.org/api/v1/parse
You can route by URL on your side or use the platform-specific endpoint when you need TikTok-specific output.
Scope and product planning
This API is intended for public single-post media URLs. Private content, profile scraping, bulk profile downloads, and live-page parsing are outside the documented scope. That boundary is useful when designing queue limits, user-facing validation, and retry policies.
Read the unified API documentation for the other supported platforms, then compare current credit plans on the API pricing page.
