Off-site GEO in 2026: earn the third-party AI citations that decide brand visibility
Summary. AI engines build their answers from other people's websites, not yours. In its 2026 AI Visibility Index, published June 26, 2026 and drawn from 126 million U.S. AI search prompts, Semrush found ChatGPT cites an average of 15 sources per answer and leans on Reddit and Wikipedia, while Gemini cites about 3 and leans on Wikipedia, Reddit and YouTube. A separate 2026 analysis by the communications firm 5W put numbers on it: 47.9% of ChatGPT's top factual citations are Wikipedia articles, and 85.5% of AI citations come from earned media rather than brand-owned websites. Market-research estimates size the generative engine optimization services market at roughly $1.1 billion to $1.5 billion in 2026. The strategic shift is plain: being mentioned by an AI engine and being cited as its source are two different jobs, and the second one happens off your domain. This guide covers where the citations actually come from, a six-channel off-site playbook, how to measure it, and what changes for Indian brands.
For a decade the SEO job was to make your own pages rank. That work still matters, but it no longer finishes the task. Andrew Warden, vice president of marketing at Adobe and former CMO of Semrush, framed it this way in the Index announcement: "visibility now depends on how consistently a brand reinforces its narrative across digital channels." When an answer engine decides whether to name you, it reads the whole web's account of you, then picks the sources it trusts to back the claim. Off-site GEO is the discipline of shaping and earning those sources.
What off-site GEO is
Off-site GEO is the practice of earning citations, mentions and consistent brand facts on third-party sites so AI engines surface and recommend you. On-page GEO is what you do to your own content: clear answers, structured data, primary sources. Off-site GEO is everything an engine reads about you elsewhere: review sites, community threads, news coverage, reference pages and comparison lists.
The distinction that trips up most teams is mention versus citation. A mention is the engine naming your brand in its answer. A citation is the domain and page the engine links as its evidence. Semrush found these do not line up: on Gemini, the overlap between mentioned brands and cited domains can be as low as 30%. You can be named without your site being the source, and you can be the source without being named. Winning AI visibility means competing on both fronts, and the citation front is mostly off your domain.
This is the same lesson as our note that ranking is not the same as being cited: the URL an engine trusts to support a claim is often not the one that ranks first in classic search.
Where AI engines actually get their citations
The evidence in 2026 is consistent on direction, if not on exact percentages. Earned, third-party and reference sources dominate. 5W's analysis found 85.5% of AI citations came from earned media, not brand websites, and that 47.9% of ChatGPT's top factual citations were Wikipedia articles. Semrush's 126-million-prompt study showed each engine drawing on a different mix, which is why a brand can be strong in one and invisible in another.
| Engine | What it leans on for citations (2026) | Off-site priority |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | ~15 sources per answer; Reddit, Wikipedia, reference and editorial media | Wikipedia eligibility plus real Reddit and community presence |
| Gemini | ~3 sources per answer; Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube | Wikipedia, YouTube with transcripts, tight structured facts |
| Perplexity | Community threads, reviews and independent publishers | Review and comparison listings, genuine forum answers |
| Google AI Overviews | Mix of ranking pages and reference sources | Traditional SEO plus earned mentions on trusted sites |
| Google AI Mode | Conversational; cited or invisible | Broad topical authority with third-party corroboration |
Two engine facts carry most of the planning weight. First, ChatGPT reads about five times as many sources per answer as Gemini (15 versus 3), so ChatGPT rewards breadth of coverage while Gemini rewards being one of a handful of trusted references. Second, both lean on Reddit and Wikipedia, which means community credibility and reference-grade notability are not optional. For a platform-by-platform breakdown, see our GEO playbook for ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
Why your homepage is not enough
The uncomfortable part for brand teams is that much of what AI engines cite is off-limits to you by design. Wikipedia forbids self-editing for promotion. Editorial media will not publish your marketing copy. Review sites are populated by customers. Reddit bans undisclosed brand seeding. You cannot buy or write your way directly onto the surfaces that carry the most weight, which is exactly why they carry weight.
That is also why owned-content-at-volume is the wrong reflex. Publishing a hundred more blog posts on your own domain does little when 85.5% of the citations sit elsewhere. The work is to become the brand that third parties describe accurately and often. Semrush's example is instructive: outdoor brand Patagonia held an AI visibility score near 79 to 80 across the study because sources including OutdoorGearLab, REI, Switchback Travel, GearJunkie and Reddit described it consistently. The engine trusted the chorus, not the homepage.
How concentrated AI visibility is, and where the openings are
Being cited is not evenly distributed. Semrush's Index found visibility clusters hard in some categories and stays open in others. In News and Media, the three most visible brands accounted for 82.9% of total category visibility, and in Consumer Electronics the top three held 76.9%. In Finance the top three accounted for just 41.4%, and in Industrial 42.2%. The read for a challenger brand is direct: in concentrated categories you fight entrenched incumbents for a citation, while in fragmented categories the seat is still open, and consistent off-site coverage can take it before rivals notice.
The ceiling is real, too. Across every platform and every month of the study, only 36 brands held top-100 visibility on all four engines at once. Semrush's "Universal 36" include YouTube, Google, Reddit, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Walmart, Disney and Nintendo. What they share is not a tactic but broad reach, sustained recognition and a clear role in helping people compare or buy. For everyone else the practical target is not universal presence, but durable citation inside one or two categories that matter, built from the third-party sources those categories' answers actually pull from.
The off-site GEO playbook
Six channels do most of the work. Treat them as a portfolio, because Semrush's data shows brands cited consistently across many source types are the ones that hold visibility.
| Off-site channel | Why AI engines weight it | First action this quarter |
|---|---|---|
| Wikipedia and reference sites | 47.9% of ChatGPT's top factual citations (5W) | Earn notability through independent coverage first; never self-edit |
| Review and comparison sites | Feed "best X" and comparison answers | Claim listings; keep specifications, pricing and categories accurate |
| Reddit and communities | ChatGPT and Gemini both lean on Reddit | Participate honestly; answer real threads, disclose affiliation |
| Digital PR and earned media | 85.5% of AI citations are earned media (5W) | Pitch data-led stories and expert commentary to trade press |
| YouTube and structured media | Gemini draws on YouTube | Turn expertise into video with accurate transcripts |
| Consistent brand facts everywhere | Reduces "brand drift" across sources | Align name, category and key facts on every profile and listing |
A few notes on doing this without wasting a quarter. Wikipedia is earned, not written: you need independent, reliable coverage to exist before a neutral editor can build a durable page, so digital PR usually precedes it. Review and comparison sites are the fastest win for B2B, because "best CRM for startups" style prompts pull directly from them. Reddit rewards patience and honesty and punishes seeding, which gets accounts and domains banned. Digital PR is the engine of the whole system, because one strong earned story can seed a Wikipedia citation, a Reddit discussion and a dozen syndicated mentions at once.
Your own pages still matter for the citation you can control. Clean, structured, primary-source content gives an engine something quotable when it does reach your domain, which is why structured data for AI search citations belongs in the plan even though the use is off-site.
How to measure it
You cannot manage what you cannot see, and most teams cannot see it yet. Semrush found 45% of marketing leaders cannot accurately measure their brand's visibility inside AI answers, and only 9% have tools to track every relevant metric across platforms. Three categories of tool now exist to close that gap: Semrush layers AI visibility onto its SEO suite, Ahrefs Brand Radar monitors AI answers and cited pages, and Profound offers enterprise answer-engine analytics.
Whatever you use, measure two things separately, not one blended score. Track mentions, which tell you how often the engine names you, and track citations, which tell you which domains it trusts as evidence. When the two diverge, as they did on Gemini down to 30% overlap, the gap tells you where to work: strong mentions with weak citations means you need better sources to back the claim; strong citations with weak mentions means the sources exist but the engine is not yet naming you.
India-specific considerations
For Indian brands the same rules apply with a local overlay. AI engines pull from Indian review platforms, regional publishers, and community forums, so the off-site targets are sites like sector-specific Indian directories, trade publications and active subreddits such as r/india and r/startups_india, alongside the global reference sources. Rising AI adoption makes this urgent rather than optional: Adobe reported AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 1,324% between October 2024 and May 2026, and Indian consumer journeys are following the same curve.
Consistency is the specific weak point to watch. Indian companies often show different legal names, categories and founding facts across MCA records, LinkedIn, Crunchbase-style directories and their own site. That inconsistency is exactly the "brand drift" that makes an engine hedge or mis-describe you. Rachel Thornton, CMO of Adobe Enterprise, put the fix plainly: "Minimizing brand drift to ensure accuracy and consistency across every digital touchpoint is now the starting point for securing visibility." Fix the facts once, everywhere, before chasing new mentions.
Run it as one integrated program
Off-site GEO fails when it is a side project. Semrush's companion survey found that among teams which fully integrate SEO and AI visibility into one workflow, 81% reported increased traffic or leads from AI platforms, against just 36% of teams that ran the two separately. The gap is the argument: earned media, reviews, community, structured data and brand-fact consistency reinforce each other, and splitting them across disconnected owners wastes the compounding.
The urgency sits in the adoption curve. ChatGPT reportedly crossed 800 million monthly users processing around 2.5 billion prompts a day in early 2026, and Perplexity grew past 230 million monthly searches. Market-research estimates put the U.S. generative engine optimization services market near $365.4 million in 2026, inside a global market of roughly $1.1 billion to $1.5 billion. Whether or not those forecasts prove exact, the direction is not in doubt: the audience deciding what to buy increasingly reads an AI answer first, and that answer is assembled from sources you do not own.
Common mistakes
The three that waste the most budget: writing more owned blog posts while ignoring earned coverage; trying to edit your own Wikipedia page, which gets reverted and can attract scrutiny; and seeding Reddit or review sites with fake praise, which risks bans and, increasingly, poisons the sources engines read. Off-site GEO is a slower, PR-shaped discipline than classic link building, and it compounds. This connects back to the wider point in our guide to SEO in 2026: trust signals, not volume, are what carry a brand into AI answers.
FAQ
What is off-site GEO?
Off-site GEO is earning citations, mentions and consistent brand facts on third-party sites so AI engines surface and recommend you. It covers review sites, community threads, news coverage and reference pages, rather than your own content. It matters because most AI citations point to earned media, not brand-owned websites.
Where do AI engines get their citations?
Mostly from earned and reference sources. A 2026 5W analysis found 85.5% of AI citations came from earned media, and 47.9% of ChatGPT's top factual citations were Wikipedia. Semrush found ChatGPT leans on Reddit and Wikipedia and cites about 15 sources per answer, while Gemini cites about 3.
Is my own website still worth optimizing?
Yes, but it is not sufficient. Your pages give an engine something quotable when it reaches your domain, so structured, primary-source content still helps. The larger share of citations sits off-site, so owned content works best alongside earned coverage rather than as a replacement for it.
How do I get cited on Wikipedia?
You earn it, you do not write it. Wikipedia requires independent, reliable coverage before a neutral editor can build a durable page, and self-editing for promotion gets reverted. Digital PR usually comes first: secure genuine press and reference coverage, and Wikipedia notability can follow from that record.
Do Reddit and reviews really change AI answers?
Yes. Semrush found both ChatGPT and Gemini lean on Reddit, and Perplexity draws heavily on community threads and reviews. Honest participation and accurate review-site listings feed "best X" and comparison answers directly. Undisclosed seeding is risky and counterproductive, because it gets accounts banned and erodes source trust.
How do I measure off-site GEO?
Track mentions and citations separately. Mentions show how often an engine names you; citations show which domains it trusts as evidence. Semrush found the two can overlap as little as 30% on Gemini. Tools like Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Profound monitor both across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
How is off-site GEO different from link building?
Link building chases backlinks for ranking signals. Off-site GEO chases accurate, consistent brand descriptions on the specific sources AI engines cite, which include unlinked mentions, reviews and reference pages. It is closer to digital PR and reputation work than to classic link acquisition, and it compounds more slowly.
