Images are usually the single biggest reason a website loads slowly. Text is tiny; a single unoptimized photo from a phone can be bigger than the entire rest of the page. And slow pages lose visitors and rankings — Google has said so for years, and users vote with the back button.
The usual suspects
Phone photos uploaded as-is. A modern phone photo is 3–5 MB. A homepage hero image should be under 200 KB. Uploading the original file means every visitor downloads megabytes they never needed.
Wrong format. PNG is great for logos with sharp edges, terrible for photos. JPEG is good for photos; WebP is usually better than both for the web, with smaller files at the same quality. Most modern browsers support WebP now.
No resizing. If an image displays at 800 pixels wide, uploading a 4000-pixel original wastes bandwidth four times over. Resize to the largest size it will actually display at, plus a little margin for high-resolution screens.
No lazy loading. Images below the fold do not need to load immediately. Native lazy loading (loading="lazy") is built into browsers now and costs nothing to add — WordPress does it by default for most images.
A quick fix checklist
- Resize images to their display size before uploading.
- Compress them — tools like Squoosh or TinyPNG cut 60–80% of the size with no visible difference.
- Use WebP where possible, JPEG for photos, PNG only for graphics with transparency.
- Keep lazy loading on for below-the-fold images.
- Re-check after uploading: a page's total image weight should ideally stay under 1 MB.
Why this matters for SEO
Page speed is a ranking factor, and it is one of the few you fully control. We regularly see small business sites drop from 4 MB of images to under 1 MB with this checklist alone, and the speed improvement is visible instantly — on mobile especially, where most Pakistani customers browse.
If your site feels slow and you are not sure why, image weight is the first place to look.
