Instagram Reel Downloader: Save Any Reel as MP4 in Original Quality
Instagram Reels are short-form videos — up to 90 seconds — and they've become one of the primary ways people share tutorials, product demos, fitness clips, and creative content. But Instagram gives you no native way to download a Reel as a real file. The "Save" button bookmarks the post inside the app. The moment you're offline, the post is deleted, or the account goes private, your saved link is gone.
Here's how to save any public Instagram Reel as an MP4 file to your device — no app install, no account, no watermark.
How Instagram Reel Downloads Work
Instagram does not expose a public download API. Tools that can download Reels work by replicating the same requests an authenticated browser session would make, then pulling the direct CDN URL for the video file.
The video file itself is a standard MP4 stored on Instagram's CDN. Once the direct URL is obtained, it can be downloaded like any other file. The video quality you get is the original upload quality — whatever the creator uploaded.
Step-by-Step: Download an Instagram Reel
On Mobile (iPhone or Android)
- Open Instagram and navigate to the Reel you want to save
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) at the bottom right of the Reel
- Tap Copy link
- Open your browser — Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android
- Go to dropzap.digital
- The Instagram tab is selected by default — paste your link into the box
- Tap Download
- The MP4 saves to your Downloads folder
iPhone extra step: Files land in the Files app. To move to Camera Roll → Open Files → long-press the video → Share → Save Video.
On Desktop
- Open Instagram in your browser
- Navigate to the Reel — the URL will look like
https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/ - Copy the URL from your address bar
- Go to dropzap.digital in a new tab
- Paste the URL → click Download
- The MP4 downloads immediately
What Gets Downloaded
| Content Type | Output | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reel | MP4 video | Original upload quality |
| IGTV video | MP4 video | Original upload quality |
| Instagram video post | MP4 video | Original upload quality |
Supported Instagram URL Formats
The downloader works with all of these:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/-
https://www.instagram.com/p/XXXXXXXXXX/(video post) -
https://www.instagram.com/tv/XXXXXXXXXX/(IGTV) - Short share links like
https://instagr.am/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/
Why SnapInsta and Similar Tools Break
Instagram regularly rotates the internal API endpoints and request headers that third-party tools depend on. Tools that aren't actively maintained go down for hours or days after each update. DropZap maintains its extractor continuously so it reconnects quickly after platform changes.
Common Issues
"Could not fetch video" error
This usually means Instagram changed something on their end. Try again after a few minutes. If it persists for more than an hour, the extractor is being updated.
Private account content
Not supported by any downloader — private accounts require login and explicit permission. Only public Reels are accessible.
The download plays in my browser instead of saving
Right-click the Download button → "Save link as" on desktop. On iPhone/Safari: long-press Download → "Download Linked File".
