Open WebUI or n8n in Docker can't reach Ollama? Fix it without OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0

If Open WebUI shows "Ollama: Network Problem", its logs say Connect call failed ('127.0.0.1', 11434), or n8n's Ollama credential fails with ECONNREFUSED ::1:11434, the cause is almost always the same. Inside a container, localhost means the container itself, not your computer. Ollama listens on 127.0.0.1:11434 on the host by default, so the container is knocking on the wrong door.

The usual advice is to set OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0. That works, but Ollama has no login, so it also lets every device on your network list, pull and delete your models and use your GPU. Here are fixes that don't do that.

Test first

From the host:

curl http://127.0.0.1:11434/api/version
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Then, from a throwaway container, test the URL your app will use:

docker run --rm --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway \
  curlimages/curl -s http://host.docker.internal:11434/api/version
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

{"version":"..."} means containers can reach it. "Connection refused" or a timeout means they can't.

Docker Desktop (Mac, Windows)

host.docker.internal is forwarded to your computer, so the URL http://host.docker.internal:11434 works and Ollama can stay on 127.0.0.1. For Open WebUI:

docker run -d -p 127.0.0.1:3000:8080 --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway \
  -e OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434 \
  -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui --restart always \
  ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

In n8n, put the same URL in the Ollama credential's Base URL.

Linux, option A: host networking

With --network=host, 127.0.0.1:11434 inside the container is the host's Ollama. Open WebUI's docs give this fix; the port becomes 8080:

docker run -d --network=host -e OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://127.0.0.1:11434 \
  -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui --restart always \
  ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Open WebUI now listens on 8080 like a normal program, so your host firewall applies to it.

Linux, option B: host.docker.internal, with only containers allowed in

On Linux, host-gateway points at the Docker bridge (usually 172.17.0.1), where an Ollama bound to 127.0.0.1 isn't listening. So let Ollama listen on all interfaces, and use the firewall to let in only Docker's networks:

sudo systemctl edit ollama.service
# [Service]
# Environment="OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434"
sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl restart ollama

sudo ufw allow from 172.16.0.0/12 to any port 11434 proto tcp
sudo ufw deny 11434/tcp
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Ollama installed on the host is a normal program, so ufw applies to it, unlike ports published with docker -p. The allow rule must come before the deny. Afterwards, curl http://<LAN IP>:11434/api/version from another device should fail, and the container test should still work.

Best: one Compose file

services:
  ollama:
    image: ollama/ollama
    volumes: [ "ollama:/root/.ollama" ]
    # no ports: only containers on this network can reach it
  open-webui:
    image: ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
    environment:
      - OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://ollama:11434
    ports: [ "127.0.0.1:3000:8080" ]
    volumes: [ "open-webui:/app/backend/data" ]
volumes:
  ollama: {}
  open-webui: {}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

n8n, Dify, Flowise or AnythingLLM in the same file use http://ollama:11434 too.

Two more traps

  • ECONNREFUSED ::1:11434 with n8n on the host: localhost resolved to IPv6. Use 127.0.0.1.
  • 403 Forbidden rather than refused: that's not networking. Ollama answered and said no, usually for one of two reasons. (1) A browser page or extension is calling Ollama, and OLLAMA_ORIGINS is doing its job. Open WebUI, n8n and Dify call Ollama from their server and don't need it, so don't "fix" a 403 by setting it to *: then every website you visit can use your Ollama. (2) A reverse proxy or tunnel (Tailscale Serve included) passes its own hostname to an Ollama listening on 127.0.0.1. In that mode Ollama only accepts localhost-style Host names, which is also why host.docker.internal works: it ends in .internal. Have the proxy send Host: localhost:11434, as the Ollama FAQ's examples do.

I made a free one-click browser check that shows whether a website can read your local Ollama (or LM Studio) right now. It runs entirely in your browser and only contacts 127.0.0.1.

The full version of this guide, with a table of which fix fits which setup, is at munimv2.github.io/docker-ollama.html. If you need Ollama from a laptop or your phone, there's a companion guide: SSH tunnel, Tailscale and LAN-only options. The free, read-only local-ai-checkup script reports Ollama's bind address, published Docker ports and versions, if you want to check you didn't open more than you meant to.
