I've been getting into modular synthesizer stuff for a good bit now and discovered a pretty awesome channel this weekend by someone called Mattelica who does really cool covers with modular gear.
Here's a cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails that is pretty sweet:
On the note of covers, I was also reminded about this awesomely funky "Man in the Mirror" cover by Scary Pockets last Friday and it's been in my head all weekend:
I've been listening to a lot of Dark Synth over the last week. I stumbled across White Bat Audio's channel and there's some awesome playlists there.
Oooooo yeah! This is right up my alley. 🙌 I love this little subset of synth music.
It kinda reminds me of John Carpenter's music at times when it's all amped up — thinking like the theme song for Escape from New York or something!
It also reminds me of Irving Force, who I was introduced to by @jdoss some time ago. Here's one of their tunes for ya to check out:
Anywho, really appreciate ya sharing this synthwave mix for me! I'm gonna pop it on and rock out for the rest of the day. 😎
I'm a huge John Carpenter fan 😄 And I love that Escape from New York theme, good choice! I think the music (and the movie itself) from Halloween 3: Season of the Witch is really underrated though it's been getting more love in recent years. White Bat Audio actually has a specific John Carpenter inspired playlist on his channel so you're absolutely right about the influence.
Speaking of horror directors who are also musicians 😆 I also really like Dario Argento's band Goblin. It's more Prog Rock but stuff like the Suspiria soundtrack is still synthy and weird, which I like, and I'll always have a soft spot for the original Dawn of the Dead's soundtrack. I think there's quite a bit of influence on Dark Synth from Italian Giallo soundtracks.
I haven't heard of Irving Force before but that's an awesome track, I've subscribed to the channel now so thank you!
Oooo I've not seen Halloween 3, and haven't heard the soundtrack either. I'm gonna have to check both out!
I fell in love with John Carpenter tunes when I started getting into Moog synthesizers (built right here in NC) and I also discovered the whole genre of synthwave this way, haha. But yeah, so dope that White Bat Audio lists John Carpenter as an influence! 🙌
I haven't heard Dario Argento's band, but what a perfect connection to make with John Carpenter — both horror directors that score their own films. I feel like horror in particular is a genre that really relies on the soundtrack to set the atmosphere, create suspense, and deliver on the scares. I'm totally gonna go explore Dario Argento's music and Italian Giallo soundtracks. Thanks for all the awesome info!
Soooo... I stumbled across this months ago and your comment made me think of it. This person envisions a Doctor Who theme if John Carpenter had composed it.
Thanks for sharing this, it's awesome! They really nailed the John Carpenter sound.
OOooo yeah! Just getting caught up on all my messages after being off a week and this is golden. ⭐️
Thanks for sharing @redhap!
I was looking here(some time ago) and found Macaroni Union's "weightless" , thanks to @jeremyf.
It's very soothing.
Edit: The name's macaroni union , not unicorn
Ooooo yes, I'm so glad you reminded me about Jeremy's suggestion! This definitely captures a really focused mood and helps me to relieve anxiety while working. The sounds sometimes remind me of wind chimes, and it almost sounds like there's a heartbeat in the background. Ethereal and very soothing!
Sometimes a little melancholy helps me. That's when I turn to The Delgados.
Specifically, their album Hate
The first track, The Light Before We Land was used as the opening for the first season of Gunslinger Girl.
I also appreciate melancholic tunes, especially those that sound as beautiful as these. Really enjoying your suggestion. Thanks a bunch! 🙌
One of my all-time favorite artists is Emma Ruth Rundle. I've been digging in on some older work of hers with a band called Marriages. Recommend if you like prog metal, dreamy layered soundscapes, unique and truly independent jams ⚡
This straight up rocks! I just searched for it on YouTube and found this really cool live in the studio version of the tune here. Thanks for sharing! 🙌
I'm a little late !
With the release of the album of ODESZA, I keep listening to it again and again. It makes you travel ! 😍😍🥰
I’ve been digging some Lofi lately for just relaxing while I work and just stumbled onto this new album and love it.
