A photo taken at noon can often be turned into a sunset or a night scene with a single text instruction. The edit looks convincing only when the light, shadows, and colors all agree with the new time. These notes cover what to ask for.
Say the time and the light source
"Make it evening" is vague. "Late sunset, low warm light coming from the right, long soft shadows" gives the editor a direction and a color. For night scenes, name the light that remains: street lamps, shop windows, or moonlight.
Adjust the sky and the ground together
- A darker sky needs darker ground and walls.
- Warm sunset light should tint skin, clothing, and surfaces, not only the sky.
- Windows and lamps should glow at night, and shadows should point away from them.
Keep the subject the same
State what must not change: the person's face, the product shape, the composition. Editors that support consistent subjects, such as Nano Banana AI, can then change the lighting without redrawing the subject.
Common problems
- Subject still looks lit by noon sun: ask again for the light direction to match the new scene.
- Colors look muddy: ask for a cleaner sunset palette or a cooler blue night tone.
- Too much change: go back to the original and make the time change the only request.
A small test set
Try the same photo at morning, sunset, and night. Comparing the three side by side shows quickly which prompt wording gives the most natural results.
