I think is difficult to maintain an open-source project, so much work and there is a lot of pressure if the project is popular, technical knowledge is not enough, you need also need soft-skills since you need to deal with all kinds of people on the internet.
You can get burnout and soon feel like it's not worth it if you don't get appreciation.
I don't know all the facts on the events, but I find it understandable. In the end, he made the right decision to let the project live.
I also don't think a project this popular can die that easily, I'm sure there were a lot of clones of the Repo and people willing to step up.
Good things also happened because of this and I hope people start to be more aware of the effort these guys put on OSS.
Indeed, he deserves respect for all the effort put into the project...
