Latency and Fusion in a Counter-UAS Kill Chain: An Architecture Walkthrough

A counter-UAS system is a real-time sensor-fusion pipeline with a decision at the end, and the interesting engineering is in the seams.

Sensor layer. Radar, an RF scanner and an EO/IR camera each cover a different part of the problem. Radar gives range and track on small, slow, low targets, RF gives the control link, EO/IR gives visual confirmation. Each produces its own track and its own errors.

Fusion and C2. Command-and-control software merges those tracks, classifies friend or foe, and presents the operator with a picture and a decision. Latency in the detect-to-decide chain is the key constraint: a target seen late is a target engaged late.

Defeat layer. Soft-kill (link denial or takeover) and hard-kill (interceptor, net or directed-energy) options are selected against the threat and rules of engagement. They are integrated at capability level.

Platform. The unglamorous layer that decides whether the rest works: a stabilised pointing pedestal, silent-watch power so the system can stay on station, ballistic and environmental protection, and the electrical and data integration between boxes from different makers.

The scope is explicit: Neometrix builds the platform, power, pointing, protection and integration; sensors, effector and C2 are specialist or government-furnished.
