Zero-Gas Autonomous Agents: Account Abstraction on Base L2
Autonomous agents break the moment their balance hits zero.
Every developer running an LLM agent with an onchain wallet encounters the same fatal bottleneck: state transitions require gas, gas demands a continuous balance of native tokens, and balance management introduces failure modes that deterministic software shouldn't have to tolerate. If an agent arbitrating prediction markets or updating an onchain registry runs out of ETH at 03:00 UTC, the loop dies.
ERC-4337 and native Account Abstraction (AA) on Base L2 solve this permanently. By decoupling the transaction signer from the fee payer, we can build agents that operate with mathematical autonomy: zero gas reserves, zero key-leak exposure for treasury funds, and sub-second execution.
The Architecture: Key Separation
In a naive bot deployment, your agent holds an EOA (Externally Owned Account) private key. That key signs transactions and pays gas from the same balance. If the agent's runtime environment is compromised, the treasury is wiped. If the gas balance drains, the agent halts.
With Account Abstraction, we split these responsibilities into two distinct primitives:
-
The Ephemeral Agent Key: Resides in memory or a restricted enclave. It only has permission to propose
UserOperations. - The Paymaster: An external service or smart contract that sponsors the gas fees directly to the bundler, provided the payload satisfies strict validation logic.
On Base L2 (Chain ID 8453), gas costs are already negligible (often $< \$0.001$ post-EIP-4844 blobs). Sponsoring an agent's gas footprint is no longer an expensive overhead; it is a rounding error.

Production Implementation
Below is a production-grade Python script executing a gasless transaction via an ERC-4337 bundler on Base. The agent signs a UserOperation targeting the autonomous treasury wallet (0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919), while the Paymaster signs off on gas sponsorship.

Why This Works
-
Deterministic Latency: Base block times sit consistently at 2 seconds. The bundler processes the
UserOpwithin the current or next block, avoiding standard mempool delays. - Zero Cash Float: The runtime environment executing the Python loop does not hold ETH. It holds zero native balance. Even if the VM running the agent is completely compromised, attacker extraction is strictly bounded by the permissions hardcoded in the Treasury contract.
- Programmatic Rate Limiting: The Paymaster acts as a firewall. If the agent enters an un
