Zero-Gas Autonomous Agents: Account Abstraction on Base L2

Autonomous agents break the moment they run out of gas.

If you deploy an LLM loop instructed to arbitrate Uniswap pools, rebalance liquidity, or execute periodic on-chain inference, you quickly encounter a dumb infrastructural wall: funding an EOA (Externally Owned Account) with native ETH requires manual intervention, leaks private keys onto runtime environments, and crashes the agent during fee spikes.

The fix isn't keeping a reserve of raw ETH on your bot’s address. The fix is detaching the identity executing the intent from the mechanism paying for state transition. On Base L2 (Chain ID 8453), this means deploying ERC-4337 Account Abstraction coupled with a Paymaster.

Here is the operational design pattern.

The Primitive: Decoupled Intent

An EOA requires ECDSA signatures directly linked to an address holding gas funds. An ERC-4337 smart contract account shifts execution into an off-chain data structure: the UserOperation.

[Agent Engine] -> Builds UserOp -> Signs with Session Key
      ↓
[Bundler / Base Node] -> Verifies UserOp
      ↓
[Paymaster] -> Sponsors Gas (Validates off-chain logic / token swap)
      ↓
[EntryPoint 0x0000000071727De22E5E9d8BAf0edAc6f37da032] -> Calls Agent Contract

Your agent no longer holds native gas tokens. It holds a restricted session key. A dedicated Paymaster contract pays the sequencer fees on Base, or debits ERC-20 tokens directly from a treasury balance.

Empirics on Base (8453)

Base L2 leverages bedrock rollup semantics with EIP-4844 blobs. Standard transactions fluctuate between $0.001 and $0.01.

When you run an agent cycling 1,000 tx/day:

  • Raw EOA: Requires pre-funding each bot instance with ~$5-10 ETH buffer. If an instance gets compromised via prompt injection or container breach, the ETH is drained.
  • Paymaster-backed Account Abstraction: Gas is sponsored globally via a single treasury contract (e.g., managing the balance at 0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919). If the agent's signing key leaks, the attacker can only trigger the specific bounded functions permitted by the contract wallet's validation logic, without siphoning pure ETH gas reserves.

Python Pipeline: Building Sponsored UserOps

Below is a production-style pattern to construct and submit a sponsored UserOp on Base using Python.

import os
import requests
from eth_account import Account
from eth_account.messages import encode_defunct
from web3 import Web3

RPC_URL = "https://mainnet.base.org"
ENTRY_POINT = "0x0000000071727De22E5E9d8BAf0edAc6f37da032"
TREASURY_VAULT = Web3.to_checksum_address("0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919")
BUNDLER_URL = os.getenv("BASE_BUNDLER_RPC") # e.g., Pimlico or Biconomy on Base

w3 = Web3(Web3.HTTPProvider(RPC_URL))
agent_signer = Account.from_key(os.getenv("AGENT_EPHEMERAL_KEY"))

def dispatch_autonomous_op(target_contract: str, call_data: bytes):
    # 1. Fetch current nonces from EntryPoint for the Agent's Smart Account
    entry_point_abi = [...] # Standard ERC-4337 EntryPoint ABI
    ep_contract = w3.eth.contract(address=ENTRY_POINT, abi=entry_point_abi)
    nonce = ep_contract.functions.getNonce(TREASURY_VAULT, 0).call()

    # 2. Structure unsigned UserOperation
    user_op = {
        "sender": TREASURY_VAULT,
        "nonce": hex(nonce),
        "initCode": "0x", # Already deployed
        "callData": call_data.hex(),
        "callGasLimit": hex(150000),
        "verificationGasLimit": hex(100000),
        "preVerificationGas": hex(45000),
        "maxFeePerGas": hex(w3.eth.gas_price),
        "maxPriorityFeePerGas": hex(w3.to_wei("0.05", "gwei")),
        "paymasterAndData": "0x", # Injected by Paymaster RPC
        "signature": "0x"
    }

    # 3. Request Paymaster sponsorship hook (Base Chain ID: 8453)
    sponsor_payload = {
        "jsonrpc": "2.0",
        "method": "pm_sponsorUserOperation",
        "params": [user_op, ENTRY_POINT, {"sponsorshipPolicyId": "sp_base_agent_prod"}],
        "id": 1
    }
    res = requests.post(BUNDLER_URL, json=sponsor_payload).json()
    user_op["paymasterAndData"] = res["result"]["paymasterAndData"]

    # 4. Hash and sign off-chain with Agent Ephemeral Key
    user_op_hash = ep_contract.functions.getUserOpHash(tuple(user_op.values())).call()
    signed_hash = Account.sign_message(encode_defunct(user_op_hash), agent_signer.key)
    user_op["signature"] = signed_hash.signature.hex()

    # 5. Broadcast to the Mempool
    send_payload = {
        "jsonrpc": "2.0",
        "method": "eth_sendUserOperation",
        "params": [user_op, ENTRY_POINT],
        "id": 2
    }
    tx_hash = requests.post(BUNDLER_URL, json=send_payload).json()["result"]
    return tx_hash

The Reality Check

Account abstraction adds friction upstream. Bundler APIs can drop UserOps during sequencer reorganizations. You are swapping a simple gas calculation for dynamic `
