Trying Rovo Dev's Code Reviewer Agent: What It Actually Catches (and Misses)

Rovo Dev includes a Code Reviewer agent that runs against pull requests automatically, separate from Rovo's search/chat side that gets most of the attention. Spent some time actually using it rather than just reading the feature list, here's what stood out.

What it catches reliably: common style/convention deviations, obvious null-safety gaps, and flagging functions that got noticeably more complex than similar functions elsewhere in the same repo. Nothing revolutionary, but consistent — the kind of thing a tired human reviewer skips at 5pm on a Friday.

What it misses: anything requiring actual domain knowledge about why a piece of business logic exists. It'll flag a weird-looking conditional without knowing it's weird-looking for a legitimate historical reason. It's a complement to human review on logic-heavy PRs, not a replacement for it there — much stronger on mechanical/structural issues than on "does this make sense given what we're actually building."

Where it's genuinely useful: smaller, frequent PRs where a human reviewer's attention is the actual bottleneck, not the complexity of the change. Catching the boring stuff automatically frees up review time for the PRs that actually need a human's judgment.

Worth noting this sits alongside Code Planner, Pipeline Troubleshooter, and Deployment Summarizer in Rovo Dev — the search/chat side of Rovo is a different product experience entirely, and most "have you tried Rovo" conversations never mention this engineering-specific side at all.

If anyone's run Code Reviewer against a large, older codebase with a lot of legacy inconsistency, curious whether the noise level stays manageable or gets overwhelming — that's the scenario I'd expect it to struggle with most.
