This is fundamentally different from languages that use virtual dispatch for similar patterns. In Java, you might use streams with lambda expressions, but each step adds overhead for calling through interfaces. Rust’s generics produce monomorphized code: one copy of the loop for each specific type chain. The actual work happens only when a consuming method is called – collect, sum, for_each, fold, or a simple for loop. The consuming method drives the iteration by calling next() repeatedly. Because the entire chain is inlined, the CPU can keep the inner loop tight, with all instructions for filtering, mapping, and counting fused together. The only memory touched is the original data and the accumulator.
Rust’s ownership rules integrate naturally with iterators. When you call into_iter() on a Vec<T>, you take ownership of its elements. As the iterator produces each value, the previous value is dropped if it is not moved into a new binding. This means you can safely consume the vector piece by piece, freeing memory as you go. If you only need a reference, you use iter() which borrows the collection. The borrow checker ensures that while you iterate, you cannot modify the collection through another reference. This eliminates the kind of concurrent modification bugs that haunt other languages.
I often use iterators in real projects. In a web server, I parse HTTP headers by iterating over the header lines, filtering for those that start with "Authorization:", and then mapping to extract the token. The chain looks like this:

Testing iterator chains is straightforward. You can collect the output of a chain into a Vec and compare it to an expected vector using assert_eq!. For property‑based testing (proptest or quickcheck), you can generate arbitrary vectors of numbers and verify that the chain produces the same result as a hand‑written loop. This gives high confidence that the declarative version is correct.
One of the most common mistakes newcomers make is to collect too early. They write:

I often pull it in for zip_eq (which panics if lengths differ) and sorted (which collects, sorts, and returns an iterator over the sorted slice). These are implemented with the same zero‑cost philosophy, often using size_hint to preallocate.
When you need asynchronous processing, the futures crate provides the Stream trait, which is essentially an asynchronous iterator. You can use similar combinators: map, filter, fold, but they work with futures. This is especially useful for processing network events or chunks of data coming in over time. The same composable approach scales from synchronous loops to asynchronous streams.
The compiler’s ability to optimize iterator chains is remarkable. I once benchmarked a chain of filter and map against a hand‑written loop. The assembly output was identical. The only difference was that the iterator version was shorter to write and easier to read. Documentation for the Iterator trait in the standard library is excellent. Every adaptor has examples and explanations. The type signatures, though sometimes long, serve as precise documentation. When I need to write a custom adaptor, I implement the Iterator trait on a struct that holds the inner iterator and any state. The compiler then integrates my adaptor into the monomorphized chain.
I have used iterators to process real‑time sensor data at 1000 Hz. Each reading comes in as a f64. I chain filter to drop outliers, map to convert units, scan to compute a moving average, and take to window the data. The consuming method writes the result into a ring buffer over DMA memory. The entire chain compiles down to a few dozen instructions per sample, well within the time budget.
The pattern is not limited to simple numeric data. I have also used iterators to traverse tree structures. The Node type in a tree can implement Iterator by returning children depth‑first. Then you can combine it with filter to find all leaf nodes, or map to extract values, or take to limit traversal. The lazy nature means you stop as soon as you find what you need.
