A year ago, "AI" on a social media scheduler's pricing page mostly meant a caption writer. This quarter it means something bigger. Almost every scheduler we looked at now connects to AI assistants through MCP, the open standard for letting an assistant talk to other apps. In practice, that means you can ask an assistant to plan a week of posts, and it can put them in your queue without you opening the scheduler.
We researched and evaluated more than a dozen AI social media scheduling tools for our Q4 refresh. Here is what the AI inside them actually does, and how we would choose one for a small business.
The four jobs AI does in a scheduler
Writing. First drafts of captions, rewrites for each network's length and tone, hashtag suggestions.
Repurposing. Turning a blog post, a link, a PDF, or a video into a set of posts. Some tools lean hard on this. PostSyncer's content agent and Buffer's AI Assistant are built around it.
Timing. Suggesting when to post based on your own past results, not a generic chart.
Assistant access (MCP). Your assistant drafts and schedules for you. Metricool even offers it on its free plan.
None of the four decides what your business should say. They remove the formatting, copying, and clicking between apps.
What else moved this quarter
Threads and Bluesky went from nice-to-have to standard on most tools.
One well-known pick raised prices by up to a third and now charges extra to post to X.
Two others finally published clear prices.
Pick by the job, not the feature list
Posting to four or more networks on a budget: an all-in-one value pick like Publer.
Posting to two or three networks and want the gentlest start: Buffer.
Running out of things to post: a tool that recycles evergreen posts by category, like SocialBee.
Running ads or tracking sales from social: a scheduler with real analytics, like Metricool.
Managing several brands or clients: a flat bundle of accounts, like SocialPilot.
Comfortable with Docker and want full control: Postiz is open source and can be self-hosted.
Two warnings
Read every AI-written post before it goes out. And a scheduler saves time on posting, not on conversation. Schedule the week, then block 15 minutes a day for replies.
