If you build or maintain sites for Houston businesses, speed is not a nice extra. Most local customers arrive on a phone, often on mobile data, often in a hurry. A slow page loses them before the first heading renders.
This is a practical checklist for website optimization for Houston businesses. It works for any small business site, whether it runs on WordPress, a static generator or a custom stack.
Measure first
Run the page through PageSpeed Insights and look at field data (real users) before lab data. Focus on the three Core Web Vitals:
| Metric | What it measures | Good target |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | Time to render the largest element | 2.5 s or less |
| INP | Responsiveness to input | 200 ms or less |
| CLS | Unexpected layout shifts | 0.1 or less |
Test the mobile result first. That is where most local traffic is.
1. Fix the LCP element
On most business sites the LCP element is the hero image. Do not lazy-load it, give it a fetchpriority hint and serve the right size:
<img src="hero-800.webp"
srcset="hero-480.webp 480w, hero-800.webp 800w, hero-1200.webp 1200w"
sizes="100vw"
width="1200" height="600"
fetchpriority="high"
alt="Houston plumbing team at work">
2. Use modern image formats and set dimensions
Convert images to WebP or AVIF, compress them and always set width and height. This cuts transfer size and stops layout shifts (CLS).
3. Lazy-load everything below the fold
<img src="team.webp" loading="lazy" width="600" height="400" alt="Our team">
4. Trim JavaScript
Audit third-party scripts: chat widgets, tracking tags, sliders. Remove what is unused, defer the rest and load heavy widgets only after interaction. Fewer scripts usually means better INP.
<script src="analytics.js" defer></script>
5. Handle fonts properly
Self-host fonts, limit weights and use font-display: swap so text shows immediately.
@font-face {
font-family: "Inter";
src: url("/fonts/inter-var.woff2") format("woff2");
font-display: swap;
}
6. Use caching and a CDN
Set long cache headers for static assets and serve them from a CDN. Visitors across Houston, and beyond, get files from a nearby edge location instead of one distant server.
7. Reduce server response time
A slow TTFB hurts everything after it. Enable page caching, use a current PHP or Node version, and keep database queries light on dynamic sites.
8. Keep the page structure clean
Avoid huge DOM trees, stacked page-builder wrappers and unused CSS. Inline the small amount of critical CSS and load the rest without blocking render.
