I too find that usually most everyone networks by contacting people you know and work(ed) with. You also touched on the point of X not having closed groups which would be important to keep out the spam and recruiters just looking to get paid.
I started a website called OpenDoorPathway.com which includes closed groups that members can create as public, private (request only) or hidden (invitation only).
It sounds like it would be a great fit for your idea of a "recruitment" group WITHOUT the recruiters. Let me know what you think! It's new so I am open to any suggestions.
