Most of my workmates if not all are extroverts and yet good programmers and It's great having such on a team, even from far away they will keep you with a positive vibe all the time.
I think there is a misconception when one is focused on what they are doing, because programmers focus their attention a lot on problem solving hence the introvert type.
In my opinion if you have attended a conference then thats where you see that most are likely not introverts.

Being able to talk a lot and relate with many is no indicative either; I'm very introverted yet in college I was always surrounded by people, we had to do a lot of team work and I was never last pick, I always liked to talk to an audience and I didn't spent a weekend night at home in the 6 years (here engineering degrees take 6 years). The difference is how you end up after the action, extroverts get pumped, they get energy from being with others, they get inspired, enjoy chitchat. They usually talk even when there is nothing to talk about.
Shy is not introverted, there are a extroverted people who's also shy, and introverts who are not shy at all, sad extroverts, happy introverts, depressing extroverts and cheerful introverts.
I'm an introvert, I like to talk in public, I don't dislike to talk to people, I do hate to chitchat and I get wasted after a social situation, I need a lot of alone time but I don't hate being around people, you may like to bungee jumping, that doesn't mean you would spend all day every day doing it. And I don't like to work surrounded by people or noise, is distracting. I don't get inspired talking I get inspired on my own or listening. I hate open office spaces, talking about nothing doesn't feel like bonding or fulfilling at all.
I see a lot of introverted people programming because talking with people is tiring for us, of course a occupation with less of it is comfortable, but nowadays specially in the frontend there is more extroverts, a lot of marketing people, a lot of designers a lot of sales people involved, task more attractive to extroverts. Nowadays we hear about how extroverted programmers should be, how "well adjusted" and "normal" are. How the "most" important thing about programming is their "people skills" which is utter nonsense. In some cases maybe, like the ones I mentioned. But no, programming is not a social occupation in the core of it, of course you work with others, but just because you cook to not die you can call yourself a chef. Steve Jobs was not a tech genius, he was a very good marking guy, Woz was the tech genius. For years occidental society has looked down to introverts, making environments very uncomfortable for us, and talking about us as people with a problem, that's far from the truth, we are different and because extroverts are more and louder, the rest of us are in the wrong. For years I acted as en extrovert to fit in, I shouldn't have. Almost all programmers I know are introverted guys, a few gals, they all look extroverted because like me, they have to make a huge effort to fit it or you'll not get a promotion, you'll not get the bonus, you'll not be taking seriously or even heard otherwise.
