Healthcare AI systems often generate outputs from data available at a particular point in time. However, many clinical workflows continue evolving after that point.
A recommendation may become stale when relevant patient information changes, new laboratory results arrive, medication orders are modified, or clinical guidance is updated.
Developers should distinguish data freshness from clinical validity. A recent data point is not necessarily relevant, and an older observation may remain clinically important.
A practical design can track timestamps, source information, relevant changes, and the assumptions behind each recommendation. Risk-based freshness policies can then determine when data should be refreshed, a recommendation reassessed, or an action held for review.
For agentic AI, validation should occur at the appropriate point in the workflow, particularly before consequential actions. Systems should not assume that an earlier approval remains sufficient when material circumstances have changed.
