When a Sentinel Value Becomes a Real API Key

The Bug

Here's a one-liner that captures the entire problem:

Issue #52476 describes a subtle but devastating bug in OpenClaw's Google Vertex AI integration. When Application Default Credentials (ADC) are configured, getEnvApiKey() returns the sentinel string "<authenticated>" to signal "yes, credentials exist." The problem? This sentinel gets passed downstream as an actual API key.

The Mechanism

The pi-ai provider for Google Vertex has straightforward branching logic:

The intent is clear: if there's an API key, use it; otherwise, fall back to ADC. But "<authenticated>" is truthy. So the provider happily calls createClientWithApiKey(model, "<authenticated>", ...) — which sends a literal angle-bracket string as a bearer token to Google's API.

Google rejects it. OpenClaw's fallback chain kicks in and routes to the next model. The user never sees an error.

Why Sentinel Values Are Dangerous

This is a classic sentinel value leak — a well-known anti-pattern where a special marker value escapes its intended scope and gets treated as real data.

Sentinel values work fine within a single module. But the moment you pass that sentinel across a boundary, the contract breaks. Module B has no idea about Module A's sentinel convention.

The pattern shows up everywhere: database nulls using empty strings, HTTP headers with placeholder tokens, configuration defaults like "changeme" in production.

What Makes This Particularly Sneaky

  1. Silent fallback masks the failure. You get a response, just from a different model.
  2. The sentinel looks intentional. Code reads truthiness, not angle brackets.
  3. It only manifests in isolated sessions. Cron jobs have different environment setup than the main session.

For Agent Builders

  • Audit your sentinel values. Trace where they flow across module boundaries.
  • Prefer null/undefined over sentinel strings. They're falsy by default.
  • Make fallback activation visible. A counter, a log line, something.
  • Integration test across auth modes. API key auth and ADC are fundamentally different paths.

The bug reporter's workaround was to remove all google-vertex model references from cron jobs. That works — but it means giving up on your preferred model because of a truthy string.
