I engineered a faster, better Arabic keyboard layout: Meet Elkatib

Let's talk about keyboard optimization. We spend endless hours optimizing our code, our IDEs, and our terminal shortcuts, but we rarely question the physical interface we use to input all that data.

For developers who type in Arabic, the standard OS keyboard layout is a bottleneck. It’s inefficient, placing high-frequency characters in sub-optimal positions and forcing your fingers into unnatural gymnastics for common words.

I got tired of the speed hit, so I built Elkatib.

The Engineering Behind Elkatib
Elkatib is a brand new Arabic keyboard layout engineered specifically for typing speed and ergonomic comfort.

Instead of sticking to the traditional arrangement, Elkatib optimizes key placement based on letter frequency and natural finger movement.

Home Row Optimization: The most commonly used Arabic characters are moved to the easiest-to-reach keys, drastically reducing the travel time for your fingers.

Minimized Lateral Stretch: The layout is designed to keep your fingers strictly within their natural columns, preventing the lateral stretching that causes typos and slows down your WPM.

Better Flow: High-frequency character combinations are mapped to promote smooth hand-alternation, keeping your typing rhythm fast and unbroken.

Try it out
If you want to bump up your Arabic WPM and type more comfortably, you can grab the layout from my repository. It installs in a few clicks on Windows.

It's completely open-source. I’m actively looking for feedback from other developers—try it out and let me know how it affects your typing speed!
