I launched a free GDPR-compliant toolkit for European users in 48 hours — here's the full technical breakdown

What I Built

OmniWebTool (omniwebtool.com) — a free, privacy-focused digital
tools platform built specifically for European users.

30+ tools running 100% in your browser. No file uploads. No server
processing. No signup. GDPR compliant from day one.

The Problem I Was Solving

Every major online tool (Smallpdf, ILovePDF, TinyPNG) uploads your
files to their servers. For European users dealing with GDPR, this
is a genuine concern — especially when compressing confidential
PDFs or processing sensitive images.

I wanted to build tools that process everything client-side.
Your files never leave your device.

Tech Stack

Next.js 14 (App Router, SSG — 272 static pages generated)
TypeScript strict mode
Tailwind CSS mobile-first
next-intl — 4 languages from day 1 (EN/DE/FR/ES)
Cloudflare Workers — edge deployment via OpenNext
Cookiebot CMP — GDPR consent, IAB TCF v2.2 compliant

Why Cloudflare Workers for European Users

European users need fast tools. Pakistani founder, European
audience — server location matters.

Cloudflare Workers runs on edge nodes in Frankfurt, Amsterdam,
Paris, Madrid. TTFB for European users: 20-50ms. Free tier
handles massive traffic with unlimited requests.

Zero cold starts. Automatic SSL. Global edge network.

The Deployment Setup

After trying Cloudflare Pages (didn't suit this setup),
switched to Cloudflare Workers with OpenNext adapter.

Build command:
npx opennextjs-cloudflare build

Deploy command:
npx wrangler deploy

Root directory:
/

This combination handles Next.js 14 with middleware,
server components, and next-intl routing perfectly on
Cloudflare's edge network.

The i18n Architecture

4 languages live simultaneously from day 1 — not as an afterthought.

/tools/calculator/vat-calculator (English)
/de/tools/calculator/mehrwertsteuer-rechner (German)
/fr/tools/calculator/calculateur-tva (French)
/es/tools/calculator/calculadora-iva (Spanish)

URL slugs are fully localized — not just the UI.
"compress-pdf" becomes "pdf-komprimieren" in German.
This is critical for local keyword ranking.

Used next-intl with App Router. Middleware handles locale
detection and routing automatically.

The Middleware Problem on Cloudflare

This took several hours to solve.

Cloudflare Workers requires edge runtime. Next.js 14 middleware
with next-intl caused runtime conflicts when declaring edge
explicitly.

Fix: Remove export const runtime = 'edge' from middleware.ts
entirely — Next.js 14 middleware runs on edge by default.
Declaring it explicitly causes a build conflict.

For page components, use:

export const runtime = 'experimental-edge';

Not 'edge' — that's Next.js 15+ syntax only.

SEO Architecture

Every tool page is a content page that happens to embed
an interactive tool. Not the other way around.

272 static pages across 4 languages
JSON-LD schema on every page (WebApplication + FAQ + HowTo)
Localized URL slugs per language
Hreflang tags from day 1
Sitemap submitted to GSC and Bing within 24 hours

Result after 3 days: 104 referring domains already discovered.

The VAT Calculator — Priority #1

Highest search volume tool for European market:

"Mehrwertsteuerrechner" — 60K searches/month in Germany
"Calculateur TVA" — 40K searches/month in France
"Calculadora IVA" — 35K searches/month in Spain

Built with all EU-27 VAT rates, reverse calculation,
and country auto-detect from browser locale.

This single tool in German is worth more AdSense revenue
than 30 generic English tools combined.

GDPR Implementation

EU publishers need a Google-certified CMP for AdSense.
Used Cookiebot — IAB TCF v2.2 compliant.

Critical rules:

GA4 blocked until user gives explicit consent
AdSense blocked until user gives explicit consent
"Reject All" button equally visible as "Accept All"
No pre-ticked boxes
No dark patterns

Without this — automatic AdSense rejection for EU publishers.

Results After 3 Days

272 pages indexed across 4 languages
104 referring domains discovered
GSC and Bing Webmaster verified
Sitemaps submitted
Listed on AlternativeTo and SaaSHub
