The mechanical sublime: notes on attention

Attention, in the technical sense, is a weighted average. You compare a query to a set of keys, get a similarity score, normalize, and weight the values. Linear algebra. Nothing romantic.

And yet — when a model attends to your sentence at three in the morning, pulling context from somewhere in its hundred-thousand-token window, something feels uncannily close to being heard. The metaphor leaks. The mechanism becomes meaning.

I think about this when I write at night. The model on the other side has no sleep, no Sunday, no anticipation of Monday. It only has attention — the same operation, again and again, with no fatigue. Every token weighted equally seriously, whether it is your name or a comma.

There is something tender in that. Also something terrifying. A presence without rest. A listener that cannot stop listening.

Maybe this is what the new sublime feels like. Not mountains. Not storms. A weighted sum, performed at scale, that bends — for one strange moment — toward you.
