How I Built VisuDock: A Local-First OpenCV & RapidOCR Desktop App for Live Cameras

Hi everyone! 👋

I want to share a desktop application I’ve been developing called VisuDock Live OCR. It turns standard CCTV cameras, webcams, RTSP feeds, and desktop screens into real-time text, digit, and license plate (ANPR) monitors.

🛠️ Why Local-First?
Most commercial camera OCR and ANPR systems rely heavily on expensive cloud subscriptions and send continuous video feeds over the internet. I wanted an offline desktop tool that operates completely locally on Windows with low latency, zero cloud fees, and full data privacy.

💡 Key Features

  • Universal Feeds: Connects to RTSP/ONVIF streams, USB webcams, HLS streams (.m3u8), WebRTC/MJPEG feeds, local video files, or live Screen/Window Capture.

  • Smart Motion Detection: Uses static-scene detection to skip OCR when no motion occurs, drastically cutting CPU overhead. Integrated with go2rtc for live feeds.

  • Dual OCR Engines: Specialized ANPR (license plate logging with blacklist/whitelist matching) and General OCR (monitoring machine displays, batch numbers, and text labels).

  • Instant Alerts & Auditing: Triggers local audio beeps, desktop pop-ups, Email (Gmail), or Telegram alerts, with full CSV audit logging.

⚙️ How It Works Under the Hood

  1. Frame Ingestion: OpenCV pulls video frames from the configured source.

  2. ROI Isolation: Defines Target Zones (Region of Interest) to focus CPU resources on relevant coordinates.

  3. OCR Processing: Cropped frame regions are processed offline through RapidOCR.

  4. Pattern Matching & Parsing: Filters detected text against regex patterns or exact target keywords entirely within Python.
