I share similar frustration with Medium's editor, which is why I have chosen dev.to as my primary authoring/publishing medium (pun intended), along with a personal repo called blog.
Among not being able to write in Markdown format, Medium doesn't support hyperlinking to different sections within an article (e.g. Table of Contents).
But, what is potentially a really cool idea is to develop a modular/pluggable CLI that takes in Markdown-formatted content and publish it to your site(s) of choice in the appropriate format.
