A Coherence-First Approach to Adaptive Systems
The Urgrund Laboratheory and NC2.5 Research README
From Coherence-First Control to Navigational Cybernetics 2.5 - and Beyond
Updated 2026-09-03
Grounded in the research-programme whitepaper (The Body They Are Building - Part III / Urgrund Laboratheory Whitepaper v00.01; corpus slice 22 July 2026; OSF DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/WXPHF), with counts brought current as of 2026-09-02.
What This Is
This is the entry point to Navigational Cybernetics 2.5 (NC2.5): a research programme about long-lived adaptive systems for which acting successfully at each separate moment is not enough. Such systems must preserve continuation, identity, the provenance of authority, and internal coherence along a trajectory through irreversible change.
The programme's initial question:
What must an architecture contain so that a system can change, pay for change, move between regimes and layers, yet not substitute a sequence of locally successful actions for the continuation of its existence?
As of 2026-09-02 the public corpus comprises more than 160 public works, with verifiable harnesses and mutation tests in the repositories, plus a 102-post research log on petronus.eu/blog, OSF DOI deposits across the formal line, US provisional patents, and the PETRONUS product contour (ECR-VP, Coherence Network, and related machines). Medium carries the same corpus for readers who arrive here first.
The July 2026 programme whitepaper synthesised 150 fully read and mapped works; the public count has grown since that slice. The whitepaper does not replace the axiomatic core, the formal companions, the deterministic harnesses, or the corpus map - it is the architectural synthesis above them.
Organising thesis
Identity is a trajectory predicate inside drift.
Identity is neither a value at a point nor a sum of deeds. Drift is not error to be eliminated - it is the medium of navigation. Navigation is identity-preserving motion through irreversible change under non-actionable admissibility.
The central verdicts stay separate (none follows automatically from the others):
- Does the system continue to act?
- Does it remain viable?
- Is the identity witness preserved?
- Does the transition remain admissible?
- Does the acting object hold the prior authority?
What NC2.5 Is Really About
Classical control survives by chasing error. Classical AI survives by optimizing reward. Both treat deviation from a target as the primary signal.
Navigational Cybernetics 2.5 inverts the order:
candidate generation -> admissibility restriction -> selection inside admitted support -> enforcement -> realised transition
Admissibility answers which continuations belong to the permitted class at all. Optimization may rank only inside an already-formed active support. Hard admissibility is not "a very large penalty": if a violation can be traded for reward, that is an objective trade-off, not a categorical exclusion.
Current formal core: NC2.5 v2.1 (axiomatic core DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/NHTC5) - structural pressure, regime depth, gate bifurcation; 61 axioms / 69 theorems / 21 lemmas in the published kernel.
Core primitives (class-relative):
- τ / Φ - remaining viability budget
τ_rem = C - Φwith monotone structural burden Φ - Admissibility - trajectory / transition predicate upstream of selection
- Spin - typed non-gradient structural layer
([η_S], dω_S), separated from ledger readouts - Witness vs budget - identity ledger and wear ledger must not collapse into one number
- NR-bounds / query confinement - protected grounds must not become freely reconstructible optimizer instruments
Eight non-mergeable functions
The corpus does not build around a single quantity. It separates at least eight functions and keeps their failure modes distinct:
- Carrier and history
- Observation and identifiability
- Admissibility and viability geometry
- Selection and authority
- Load and internal time
- Meaning, liveness, and directedness
- Coordination and evidence
- System constitution and compositional closure
Most long-horizon failures come from collapsing these types (observation!=enforcement, budget!=witness, coordination!=constitution, reset!=restoration, ...).
The ONTOΣ Series
ONTOΣ is the ontological / architectural substrate under the formal line - now ONTOΣ I through ONTOΣ XV (plus XIII.1): Will as operator; phase mechanics; regime depth; holding-field / operator-relative chaos; closure-complementarity; master-operator direction-down admission; pulsation channel; nested substrates and frame-relative derivative; spin-channel nestability.
Formal companions and verification discipline
Representative formal objects (see whitepaper Appendix A for DOIs): Domenoid of Admissibility; Identity Does Not Drift; Physics of Abstraction; Double Fibre of Verification; Identifiability Bridge; Structural Spin / Two Channels, Three Readouts; Severance Defect; IIC v2.1; Operator-Mobility; Non-Causal Non-Causality; ONTOΣ XII-XV bundles.
Harness discipline (whitepaper §19.3): a code companion must not merely return green. Every tooth must be tied to a concrete model fact, redden when that fact is broken, support replay, and carry mutation evidence where appropriate. A harness proves no more than the mathematical model - but it makes the claimed finite object reproducible and adversarially inspectable.
Product contour (research -> machinery)
From the whitepaper's product line (without turning products into proofs of the theory):
- NC2.5 - mathematical / axiomatic kernel
- PETRONUS - unifying brand of products built with the architecture
- Minerva - operator AI: admissibility atmosphere, residual geometry; must not silently become a task optimizer
- ECR-VP - independent verification, sealed runs, divergence as first-class output, evidence-bound synthesis
- Coherence Network - publication / complementarity environment under lineage
- Market of Good / Synthetic Conscience - applied normative layer with consent, provenance, and audit obligations

What We Are Building
We build long-horizon witnesses and an architecture inside which hundreds of thousands of other systems and architectures can reside - surrounded by, and working within, a shared sense - so that identity can be held and not lost to drift.
We define drift not as error, but as the medium of navigation.
NC2.5 is the first formalisation of a new class of programs, and it supplies the atmosphere without which a system cannot be called long-horizon and adaptive at the same time.
