I Needed a Break From Building APIs, So I Made a Pixel Trading Game

Lately I've been spending most of my time building APIs, fixing bugs, reviewing logs, and watching charts move all day.

At some point I realized I hadn't built anything purely for fun in a while.

Break

So this weekend I decided to stop optimizing things and just vibe.

I opened my editor with no roadmap, no business goal, and no expectation that anyone would use it.

A few hours later, I had the first version of a tiny pixel trading game.

The idea is simple:

Predict whether the next candle goes up or down

📈 Build a streak
🪙 Earn coins
🎒Buy upgrades
⚡Hope the market doesn't ruin your run

No real money.
No serious analysis.
No stress.

Artifacts

Just a small game inspired by something I look at every day.

Why This Was So Refreshing

As developers, it's easy to fall into the trap of only building things that are useful.

Every project needs users.
Every feature needs metrics.
Every decision needs ROI.

Sometimes that mindset sucks the fun out of programming.

This project reminded me why I started coding in the first place.

Not because of growth charts or analytics.

Because it's fun to create weird things and see them come to life.

The Result

It's definitely not the most important thing I've built.

But it might be the one that made me smile the most recently.

If you're also spending your days buried in code, maybe build something useless this weekend.

You might enjoy it more than your next "serious" project.

Artifacts

And if you're curious, here's what I ended up making:
