UV tattoo ink contains phosphorescent compounds such as zinc sulfide doped with copper (ZnS:Cu) or strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium (SrAl2O4:Eu,Dy), not the pigments used in standard ink.
No UV tattoo ink is FDA approved, and in the EU and UK it must comply with REACH Annex XVII Entry 75, which restricts roughly 4,000 substances in tattoo inks.
Phosphorus-based UV ink is banned and dangerous; if a supplier offers ink described as phosphorus-based, refuse it and report the supplier.
Published clinical data on UV ink is thin: case reports describe granulomatous and phototoxic reactions, but long-term cohort studies do not exist.
