Parts of an Incandescent Light Bulb and Their Functions

  1. Glass Bulb (Envelope)
  • Made of heat-resistant glass.
  • Protects the filament from oxygen and external damage.
  • Maintains an airtight environment for the inert gas.
  1. Tungsten Filament
  • Acts as the light-emitting element.
  • When current passes through, it heats up to around 2500–3000°C, producing light.
  • Tungsten is used because it has a high melting point and good electrical resistance.
  1. Inert Gas (Argon or Nitrogen)
  • Fills the inside of the bulb to prevent oxidation of the filament.
  • Helps increase bulb lifespan and reduces filament evaporation.
  1. Support Wires
  • Provide mechanical support to the filament.
  • Keep it properly aligned and stable during operation.
  1. Contact Wires
  • Carry electric current from the base to the filament.
  • Ensure a stable electrical connection inside the bulb.
  1. Stem or Glass Mount
  • Holds the filament assembly and connects it to the bulb base.
  • Also serves as a support structure for internal components.
  1. Screw Base or Cap
  • Connects the bulb to the socket and power supply.
  • Usually made of aluminum or brass for electrical conductivity.
  1. Insulation Layer
  • Separates the metal base from the central contact to avoid short circuits.
  1. Central Contact Point
  • The terminal through which electric current enters the bulb.

The incandescent light bulb remains a foundational concept in electrical engineering and physics. It demonstrates the basic principle of converting electrical energy into light through thermal emission.
