Most guest lectures end the moment the session does. A few students always send a follow-up message afterward — what happens in that first reply decides whether it becomes an ongoing mentor relationship or a dead end.
What that first reply should do
- Answer the actual question asked, specifically, rather than a generic 'keep learning' response.
- End with one small, concrete next step for the student to try.
- Leave the door open explicitly — 'let me know how it goes' invites the next message far better than silence does.
Where it goes from there
A student who reports back on that next step is showing exactly the habit that makes a mentor keep investing — see what a good mentee does. The relationship compounds one honest exchange at a time, not from a single big gesture.
