What college fest organisers are actually screening for when they pick a speaker

Organisers rarely book the most credentialed speaker available — they book the one they trust will show up prepared, fit the audience, and not need excessive hand-holding to make the day work.

What they're actually screening for

  • Responsiveness: a speaker who replies within a day or two, with clear answers to logistics questions, reads as low-risk.
  • Fit for the specific audience — a talk pitched at final-years lands wrong at a first-year induction, and organisers notice when a speaker asks about audience level before agreeing.
  • Evidence they've done this before and it went well: a past session, even a short clip or a write-up, does more than a list of credentials.
  • A track record of turning up on time and prepared — this gets asked about informally, between organisers, more than speakers realise.
