The internet didn’t appear fully formed. It evolved in distinct generations, each reshaping how we create, share, and control information.
Web 1.0: The Static Web (1990s)
Think of it as a giant digital library. Pages were fixed documents built with HTML, CSS, and simple hyperlinks. Users were pure consumers—reading text and looking at images. There were no logins, no comments, and no personalization. Once a page was published, it stayed that way until the site owner updated it.
Web 2.0: The Interactive Web (2000s–Present)
This is the web most of us know today. Social platforms, blogs, and apps turned users into creators. Powered by PHP, JavaScript, databases, and cloud services, people could post, like, share, and log in. The trade-off? A handful of large companies centralized control and monetized the data users generated.
Web 3.0: The Decentralized Web (Emerging)
The next phase aims to put ownership back in users’ hands. Built on blockchain, smart contracts, and crypto wallets, Web 3.0 promises a trustless environment where people control their own data and digital assets. Challenges remain: higher energy use in some networks, slower transactions, and a steeper learning curve for everyday users.
Each generation solved the limitations of the last while introducing new ones. Web 1.0 gave us access. Web 2.0 gave us participation. Web 3.0 is trying to give us ownership.
