That happened a few years ago when looking for my second job (while I was still working in my company). I was still junior at the time. I went to three interviews to the company, 400km back and forth plus half a day of paid time off each time.
They seemed really interested but when the salary offer arrived.... Basically they offered me to work more hours for a lower salary than I had in my current company. What amazed me is that they asked my current salary and expectations on the first job interview. I asked them why they made me come three times if they knew I was not in their budget, they answered "We wanted to see whether you were motivated enough to work for us".
I obviously refused the offer.
