"Ghost in the Machine: Building a Haunted Terminal with Local Open-Source AI & Web Speech API"

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

👻 Introduction

For Hacktoberfest 2026 Week 4: Ghost in the Machine, I wanted to build something that blends retro nostalgia, privacy-first open-source AI, and immersive audio. Introducing the Haunted Terminal & Ghost Shell Whisperer—a local-first terminal companion that watches your shell commands and whispers eerie, contextual commentary both on screen and out loud!

🛠️ What I Built

A retro CRT-styled web terminal interface built with pure HTML, CSS, and lightweight JavaScript inference logic combined with the browser's Web Speech API (speechSynthesis).

When users type commands like git status, npm install, sudo, or hack:

  1. The local machine instantly evaluates the command without sending any data to external cloud servers.
  2. It outputs spooky CRT text styling.
  3. It triggers a synthesized, low-pitched voice whisper that speaks the haunting commentary directly through your speakers!

💡 Why Open Innovation Matters Here

  • Zero Internet Required: Works completely offline on your laptop with the lights (and Wi-Fi) turned off.
  • Privacy First: Your terminal commands and project file paths never leave your local workspace to feed a third-party server.
  • Customizable Spirits: Easily swap response rules or plug in local Ollama/open-weight models.
