Introduction
For Hacktoberfest 2026 (Week 2: Side Hustle), I wanted to build something practical that solves a real-world problem. Freelancers and small business owners handle sensitive financial documents daily, but uploading receipts and invoices to third-party closed APIs often raises data privacy concerns.
To solve this, I built Local-First Invoice & Receipt Sorter—a web tool powered by open-source AI principles that helps freelancers instantly categorize and extract structured data from raw invoices while keeping privacy at the core.
What It Does
- Paste & Sort: Paste raw, unstructured invoice text directly into a clean dashboard.
- Structured JSON Output: Instantly extracts key details like Vendor, Date, Total Amount, Category, and Line Items.
- Open-Source & Secure: Designed with a local-first philosophy, ensuring financial data stays protected and transparent.
Why Open-Source AI Matters Here
Using open-weight models and open-source frameworks makes this side hustle viable for a few critical reasons:
- Data Privacy: Freelancers do not have to worry about sensitive financial data leaking to third-party proprietary servers.
- Cost Control: By avoiding expensive per-token enterprise closed APIs, the operational cost remains near zero, making the side hustle actually profitable.
- Flexibility: Complete control over prompt structuring, parsing logic, and model swapping.
Tech Stack & Deployment
- Backend: Node.js, Express, and CORS.
- Frontend: Clean, responsive UI built with Tailwind CSS.
- Deployment: Hosted live on Render 👉 Invoice Sorter AI Live App
- Version Control: Managed via GitHub 👉 GitHub Repository
First User Testing & Feedback
I had a fellow freelancer test out the live deployment by pasting real service invoice text.
- Their Feedback: They loved how fast the JSON parsing was and emphasized that having a tool where they don't have to worry about cloud tracking gives them immense peace of mind.
- Next Steps: They requested adding a direct PDF upload and CSV export feature for easier accounting software integration!
Conclusion
Building this side hustle during Hacktoberfest taught me how powerful open-source AI tools can be when applied to niche, real-world problems. Check out the live app, explore the GitHub repo, and let me know your thoughts!
