Malaysia Public Transport Guide 2026: LRT, MRT, KTM, Bus & Touch 'n Go

Malaysia's urban rail network is one of the most extensive in Southeast Asia — but if you're new to it, the different operators, line names, and payment methods can be confusing. This guide covers everything you need to know.

This guide is cross-posted from Sorted — a free resource for navigating Malaysian bureaucracy and life admin.

Quick Summary

  • Minimum fare: RM0.70 (bus)
  • Rail fares: RM1.00–RM9.50
  • Monthly pass (PULSE): From RM30/month
  • Payment: Touch 'n Go card (physical) or TNG eWallet (NFC)

The Klang Valley Rail Network

The Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur and surroundings) has rail and bus services run by three separate operators:

Operator Services Fares
Rapid KL (Prasarana) LRT (Ampang/Sri Petaling + Kelana Jaya), MRT (Kajang + Putrajaya lines), KL Monorail, Rapid KL Bus RM1.00–RM9.50
KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) KTM Komuter (commuter rail, greater KV) ~RM1.00–RM10.60
ERL (Express Rail Link) KLIA Ekspres, KLIA Transit (airport trains) RM35 (KL Sentral–KLIA)

These are separate companies with separate fare systems. A PULSE monthly pass (Rapid KL) does NOT cover KTM or ERL.

The Lines

  • Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT — Two branches merging at Masjid Jamek. Covers Ampang, Cheras, Puchong, Sri Petaling.
  • Kelana Jaya LRT — KL city centre to Kelana Jaya and Putra Heights. Passes KLCC, KL Sentral, Subang.
  • Putrajaya MRT — Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral. Covers Kepong, KLCC, Bukit Bintang.
  • Kajang MRT — Sungai Buloh to Kajang. Covers Damansara, KL Sentral.
  • KTM Komuter — Commuter rail for longer suburban distances. Klang–Batu Caves, Port Klang–Tanjung Malim.
  • KL Monorail — Short city line, KL Sentral to Titiwangsa. Good for Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit.
  • KLIA Ekspres — Airport train, premium, separate fare system.

How to Pay: Touch 'n Go Card

The Touch 'n Go (TNG) card is the standard payment method for all Rapid KL and KTM services.

Physical TNG Card vs TNG eWallet

Physical TNG Card TNG eWallet (NFC)
Works on rail gates? Yes — all Rapid KL and KTM Yes, if phone has NFC
Also covers Highway tolls, car parks Online payments, P2P transfer, bills
Where to buy 7-Eleven, Petronas, MyNews, stations Download app
Cost RM10 (includes RM5 value + RM5 deposit) Free
Lost protection None (unregistered) Yes (tied to account)

Recommendation: Get a physical TNG card for daily transit. Keep the eWallet for online payments. Phone battery failure = transit crisis — don't rely solely on the app.

Top Up Methods

  • 7-Eleven, Petronas Mesra, MyNews, KK Super Mart — most common
  • ATMs — selected banks
  • TNG kiosks at major train stations
  • TNG app (if card is registered)
  • KTM counters

Minimum top-up: RM10. Maximum balance: RM600.

Warning: Keep at least RM3–5 on your card. If your balance is too low, the exit gate rejects you and you'll be charged the maximum fare. Always top up before you run out.

Monthly Passes: PULSE

If you commute 4+ days a week, a PULSE pass saves you money.

Pass Coverage Price
PULSE Rail Unlimited trips on all Rapid KL rail RM100/month
PULSE Bus Unlimited trips on all Rapid KL bus RM30/month
PULSE Rail + Bus Rail AND bus combined RM120/month

Is It Worth It?

A typical 5-day commuter making 20 round trips/month at RM3.00 each way = RM120 without a pass. PULSE Rail = RM100. Saves RM20/month minimum. The longer your commute, the more you save.

The pass pays for itself after about 17 days of 5-day commuting. After that, every ride is free.

How to Buy

  • MyRapid app (iOS/Android) — easiest
  • Rapid KL customer service counters at major stations
  • Loaded onto your Touch 'n Go card (physical or eWallet)
  • Activates on first use — 30 days from the day you first tap in

Note: PULSE does NOT cover KTM or ERL. KTM has its own monthly pass (Tiket Musim) — buy at any KTM station counter.

Concession Cards: 50% Off for Students, Seniors & OKU

If you're a student, senior citizen (60+), or OKU (person with disability), you qualify for half-price fares on all Rapid KL services.

Who Discount Documents Needed
Students (primary–pre-university) 50% Student ID + MyKad/birth cert
Senior citizens (60+) 50% MyKad (age auto-verified)
OKU 50% OKU card (Kad OKU from JKM)

How to get the card: Visit any Rapid KL Customer Service counter (KL Sentral, Masjid Jamek, KLCC, Dang Wangi, Chan Sow Lin). Bring your documents. Card is issued on the spot.

Journey Planning Apps

  • MyRapid — Official Prasarana app. Plan LRT/MRT/Monorail/bus journeys, buy PULSE passes, real-time arrivals.
  • Google Maps — Good for quick door-to-door routes combining rail + bus.
  • Moovit — Crowdsourced, often has more accurate bus info than Google Maps for Malaysia.
  • KTM Mobile — For KTM Komuter schedules and intercity booking.

Pro Tips

Save Money

  • Get a PULSE pass if commuting 4+ days/week
  • Apply for concession card if eligible — 50% off adds up to hundreds per year
  • Take KTM for long suburban trips — often cheaper per km than LRT
  • Feeder buses cost RM1 flat — use them instead of Grab for last-mile

Avoid Common Mistakes

  • Always tap OUT. Forgetting means maximum fare. Report same-day at customer service for a refund.
  • Don't double-tap. One tap in, one tap out. If you accidentally tap twice, go to customer service before leaving.
  • Know your platform. LRT Kelana Jaya and KTM often share buildings but are different levels and separate gates.
  • Avoid peak hours (7:30–9:30am, 5:30–7:30pm) if you can shift by 30–60 minutes.

Key Interchange Stations

  • KL Sentral — The main hub. KTM, Kelana Jaya LRT, Monorail, KLIA Ekspres all connect here.
  • Masjid Jamek — Free transfer between Kelana Jaya LRT and Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT.
  • Titiwangsa — KL Monorail ↔ Putrajaya MRT.
  • Muzium Negara — Kajang MRT ↔ KTM Komuter.

FAQ

Can I use my phone (TNG eWallet) instead of a physical card at gates?
Yes, if your phone has NFC. Open the eWallet, tap "Go" to activate transit mode, then tap your phone at the gate. Keep a physical card as backup — a dead phone means you can't tap out.

I forgot to tap out and was charged maximum fare. What now?
Go to the customer service counter at any Rapid KL station before leaving. They can usually reverse the overcharge. Or call 1-800-38-7787. Same-day resolution is much easier.

Does PULSE cover KLIA Ekspres?
No. KLIA Ekspres is a separate company (ERL). Pay separately.

Can tourists use Touch 'n Go at the same fares as locals?
Yes. Physical TNG card works for anyone, same fares. Concession discounts are for Malaysian residents only.

My TNG card is lost. Can I recover the balance?
Only if the card was registered to your name. Unregistered cards: balance is gone. Registered cards: call TNG (1-300-88-8088) or visit a service centre. Register your card via the TNG app — it takes 2 minutes and protects your balance.

Fares and pass prices are correct as of March 2026. Verify current fares at myrapid.com.my (Rapid KL), ktmb.com.my (KTM), or kliaekspres.com (ERL) before travel.
