Malaysia Toll Roads Explained: RFID, SmartTAG, and Touch 'n Go (2026 Guide)

If you drive in Malaysia, you have three ways to pay at toll plazas — and most drivers are still using the slowest one. Here's what you need to know about RFID, SmartTAG, and Touch 'n Go.

This guide is part of Sorted — free, no-nonsense guides for Malaysian life admin.

The Three Ways to Pay at Malaysian Tolls

Method Setup Cost How It Works Verdict
RFID Sticker (Tol RFID) Free Windscreen sticker linked to TNG eWallet — hands-free Recommended
SmartTAG RM35–RM110 In-car transponder, insert TNG card Still works, being phased out
Touch 'n Go Card Free (card is RM10) Manual tap at dedicated lane Slowest option

Bottom line: Get the RFID sticker. It's free, hands-free, and the government's preferred system.

RFID Sticker: How to Get One

The RFID (Tol RFID) sticker is a small windscreen sticker that deducts toll charges directly from your Touch 'n Go eWallet as you drive through.

Steps:

  1. Download the TNG eWallet app and complete eKYC (MyKad verification)
  2. Register for RFID — go to Profile → RFID in the app. Enter your vehicle plate number.
  3. Choose a collection point — PLUS R&R rest areas, selected Petronas/Shell stations, or TNG service centres
  4. Collect your sticker — bring your MyKad and vehicle grant (geran)
  5. Install on inside of windscreen — upper centre, just below the rearview mirror
  6. Link your vehicle in the app — tolls deduct from your eWallet automatically

Important: Each sticker is registered to one vehicle plate. You cannot transfer it. If you sell the car, de-register the RFID first.

Window Tint Warning

If your car has metallic or IR-blocking window tint, RFID signals may be blocked. In that case, use SmartTAG instead (it's not affected by tint).

SmartTAG vs RFID: Quick Comparison

SmartTAG RFID Sticker
Device needed Yes (RM35–110) No (sticker is free)
Payment source TNG card inside device TNG eWallet (app)
Works with metallic tint Yes No
Future-proof Being phased out Government preferred

Major Malaysian Highways and Toll Rates

Malaysia's highway network is largely operated by PLUS Malaysia. Key routes:

Highway Route Typical Toll (Class 1 car)
North-South Expressway Full KL to JB (~330km) ~RM46
North-South Expressway KL to Penang (~360km) ~RM44
Penang Bridge (1st) Mainland to Penang island RM7.00 one-way
Penang Second Bridge Batu Kawan to Penang island RM8.50 one-way
ELITE (E6) KL to Seremban via KLIA RM3.00–RM15.00
LDP (E11) Damansara-Puchong RM1.60–RM3.50

PLUS uses a closed toll system — your toll is calculated based on where you enter and exit, not fixed per plaza. Keep this in mind: if you enter the wrong entry point, contact PLUS at 1-800-88-0000 if overcharged.

PLUSMiles: Free Rewards You're Probably Not Claiming

If you use PLUS highways, register for PLUSMiles — earn 1 PLUSMile per RM1 paid in toll, redeemable for toll credits and vouchers. Register at myplus.my or the PLUS app. It's free and most regular PLUS users are not enrolled.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrong lane: RFID = blue sign, SmartTAG = yellow sign, TNG card = orange sign. Each accepts only its designated payment method.
  • MLFF gantries: Multi-Lane Free Flow sections have no barriers. If your RFID fails to read, you'll get a penalty notice by mail. Set TNG eWallet auto-reload.
  • SmartTAG TNG card running out: The card inside SmartTAG is separate from your eWallet. Check it before long trips.
  • Unregistered TNG card: Register your physical TNG card via the app — lost cards with registered accounts can have their balance restored.

What to Do If You're Overcharged

  1. Note the plaza name, time, and transaction amount from your TNG app
  2. PLUS highways: 1-800-88-0000 or myplus.my
  3. TNG eWallet: In-app dispute function or 1-300-88-8088
  4. Keep a screenshot of the transaction as evidence

The Verdict

Get the RFID sticker. It's free, takes 15 minutes to set up, and you never have to think about tolls again. If your car has metallic window tint, get a SmartTAG. Either way — ditch the manual TNG card tap lane.
